Based on Article 16 of the Regulation on Admission and Training for Master's Level issued with Circular 23/2021/TT-BGDDT, the violations by students are handled as follows:

Handling Violations by Students

1. Students who commit fraud in examinations, tests, or the evaluation of study results will be disciplined for each module violated.

2. Students who take exams on behalf or have someone else take exams on their behalf will be disciplined with a one-year suspension for the first offense and expulsion for the second offense.

3. Students who violate one of the following regulations will be expelled, and if a master's degree has been issued, it will be revoked and canceled according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training:

a) Committing fraud in admission, study, thesis defense, project, or in preparing documents to receive diplomas or certificates;

b) Using other sources' results or improper copying, referencing in the thesis, project, and, if the parts used, copied, or referenced are removed, leaving the thesis or project failing to meet the requirements as concluded by the assessment council;

c) Hiring or outsourcing someone else to write the thesis or project.

4. The regulations of the training institution detail the handling of violations by students.

Therefore, a student who hires someone to write a master's thesis will be disciplined with expulsion; if the master's degree has been issued, it will be revoked and canceled as per the Ministry of Education and Training's regulations.

Vietnam: How long is a master's thesis conducted? How many instructors are needed for a master's thesis?

Based on Article 8 of the Regulation on Admission and Training for Master's Level issued with Circular 23/2021/TT-BGDDT, the guidance on the thesis is regulated as follows:

Thesis Guidance

1. Students in the research-oriented program must conduct a research topic that ranges from 12 to 15 credits, the results of which must be presented in a thesis. Students conduct their thesis over a minimum period of 6 months.

2. A thesis is a scientific report summarizing the main research results of the student, meeting the following requirements:

a) Contributes to theory, scholarship, or technology development, innovation; demonstrates the research capacity of the student;

b) Aligns with the cultural, ethical norms and customs of the Vietnamese people;

c) Complies with the academic integrity guidelines of the training institution and the current legal regulations on intellectual property.

3. Each student has one or two thesis instructors, of which one must be a permanent lecturer of the training institution. At one time, an independent instructor supervises no more than 5 students (including those completing the graduation component of an applied program); in case of co-instructing, 2 students are equivalent to independently instructing 1 student.

Thus, a master's thesis is conducted over a minimum of 6 months. A master's thesis requires one or two instructors, one of whom must be a permanent lecturer of the training institution.

Additionally, at one time, an independent instructor supervises no more than 5 students (including those completing the graduation component of an applied program); in case of co-instructing, 2 students are equivalent to independently instructing 1 student.

What is the deadline for grant of master's degrees in Vietnam?

Based on Article 12 of the Regulation on Admission and Training for Master's Level issued with Circular 23/2021/TT-BGDDT, the recognition of graduation and awarding of the master's degree is regulated as follows:

Recognition of Graduation and Awarding Master's Degree

1. Conditions for a student's graduation recognition:

a) Have completed the modules of the training program and satisfactorily defended the thesis or project;

b) Have a foreign language proficiency meeting the output standard of the training program before graduation consideration, evidenced by one of the diplomas or language certificates at level 4 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Competency Framework for Vietnam specified in the Appendix of this Regulation or other equivalent certificates announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, or a bachelor's degree or higher in a foreign language major, or a bachelor's degree or higher in another field where the program is completely conducted in a foreign language;

c) Have completed responsibilities as per the training institution's regulations; not being criminally prosecuted and not during a period of academic or disciplinary suspension.

2. The training institution organizes the review and decision on graduation recognition within 2 months from the date the student successfully defends their thesis or project; a maximum of an additional 3 months if a thesis or project needs to be assessed.

3. The training institution issues the master's degree to the student within 1 month from the date the graduation recognition decision is made.
