*Conditions for primary school students

According to Clause 1, Article 11 of the Regulations on Assessment of Primary School Students, issued with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, the rules are as follows:

Assess completion of the class program and primary education program

  1. Assess completion of the class program:

a) Students are confirmed to have completed the class program if they are assessed with one of the three levels: Excellent Completion, Good Completion, or Completion.

b) For students who have not been confirmed to have completed the class program, the teacher will create a plan, guide, assist, and conduct supplementary assessments to evaluate the completion of the class program.

c) For students who have been guided and assisted but still do not meet the conditions to complete the class program, depending on the degree of incompletion in subjects, educational activities, formation and development levels of some qualities and abilities, the teacher will make a list to report to the principal to organize assessments and reviews and decide on promotion or retention.

Thus, primary school students may be promoted if the following conditions are met:

- Assessed with educational results from Completion level or higher specifically:

+ Not achieving Excellent Completion or Good Completion levels, but having evaluations in subjects and educational activities at Good Completion or Completion levels.

+ Qualities and abilities rated as Good or Satisfactory.

+ End-of-year periodic test scores in subjects of 5 or higher.

- Students who have been guided and assisted but still do not meet the conditions to complete the class program.

*Conditions for lower secondary school and upper secondary school students

According to Article 12 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the conditions for promotion for secondary and upper secondary school students for the 2024–2025 school year are:

- The overall conduct for the school year (including re-assessment results after summer training) is rated as Satisfactory or higher.

- The academic performance for the school year (including re-assessment results of subjects) is rated as Satisfactory or higher.

- Absences do not exceed 45 days in one academic year (based on an education plan of 01 day/event as stipulated in the General Education Curriculum, including both excused and unexcused absences, either consecutive or non-consecutive).

What are the methods of student assessment in secondary schools for the academic year 2024-2025 in Vietnam?

According to Article 5 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the forms of assessment are stipulated as follows:

Forms of Assessment

  1. Comment-based Assessment

a) Teachers use spoken or written comments to assess the performance of students in training and learning tasks; comments on students' progress, outstanding strengths, and main limitations during their training and learning process; evaluation of students' training and learning results.

b) Students use spoken or written comments to self-assess their performance in training and learning tasks, progress, outstanding strengths, and main limitations.

c) Parents, agencies, organizations, and individuals involved in the education of students can provide feedback on the performance of students' training and learning tasks.

d) Comment-based assessment of students' training and learning results is used in both regular and periodic assessments through various assessment forms that capture performance in their training and learning tasks suited to each subject.

a) Teachers use numerical scores to assess students' training and learning results.

b) Score-based assessment is used in both regular and periodic assessments through various assessment forms that capture performance in their training and learning tasks suited to each subject.

  1. Assessment forms for subjects

a) Comment-based assessment for subjects like Physical Education, Arts, Music, Fine Arts, Local Educational Content, Experience and Vocational Activities; the results for these subjects are evaluated as either Passed or Not Passed.

b) Combined comment-based and score-based assessment for other general education subjects; the results for these subjects are graded on a 10-point scale, which must be converted if using a different scale. Scores are recorded as whole numbers or to the first decimal place after rounding.

Thus, there are 02 forms of assessment for students in the 2024-2025 school year:

- Comment-based Assessment

- Score-based Assessment

What is the purpose of assessment for lower secondary school students in Vietnam?

According to Article 3 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the purpose of assessments for students in the 2024-2025 school year is:

- To determine the level of completion of students' training and learning tasks as required by the General Education Curriculum;

- To provide accurate and timely information for students to adjust their training and learning activities, and for educational administrators and teachers to adjust their teaching activities.
