Vietnam: Which textbooks does the latest List of 4th grade math textbooks include?

Based on the List of 4th grade textbooks used in educational institutions issued together with Decision 4434/QD-BGDDT in 2022, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam approved the latest 4th grade math textbooks for primary school students, including:

What are the conditions for the content of 4th grade math textbooks in Vietnam?

Based on Article 5 of the Regulation on standards, process of compiling, editing textbooks; standards of organizations, individuals compiling textbooks; organization and activities of the National Council for Textbook Evaluation promulgated together with Circular 33/2017/TT-BGDDT, the content of 4th grade math textbooks for primary school students must meet the following conditions:

- The content of the textbooks reflects accurately and fully the content of the subject curriculum or educational activities; ensuring basic, scientific, practical, and suitable for Vietnamese reality.

- The terminology, concepts, definitions, figures, events, images should be accurate, objective, consistent, and appropriate to the students' level; figures, events, and images should have a clear origin.

- New scientific achievements related to the subject curriculum, educational activities should be updated, meeting the requirements of international integration and in accordance with the objectives of the subject curriculum, educational activities.

- The educational content regarding national sovereignty, human rights, children's rights, gender equality, sustainable development, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation should be appropriately reflected.

What is the procedure for the professional team to choose 4th grade math textbooks in Vietnam?

The procedure for choosing 4th grade math textbooks in schools is regulated based on Article 7 of Circular 27/2023/TT-BGDDT. To be specific:

- Based on the plan of the Council and the criteria for selecting textbooks, the professional team leader develops a plan to organize the selection of textbooks for each subject structured in the professional team, reporting to the head before implementation;

- Organize for all subject teachers within the educational institution (including regular, contract, seconded, visiting, inter-school teachers) to participate in selecting the textbooks for that subject;

- At least 20 days before the first meeting of the professional team, the professional team leader organizes for the subject teachers to study the textbooks, write feedback, and evaluate the textbooks according to the textbook selection criteria;

- The professional team leader organizes a meeting with the subject teachers to discuss and vote to select one (1) textbook for that subject.

In the case where only one textbook is approved by the Minister of Education and Training, the professional team selects the textbook in the decision without voting.

The selected textbook must be chosen by at least half of the subject teachers.

If no textbook receives votes from at least half of the subject teachers, the professional team must discuss and vote again; the selected textbook is the one receiving the most votes in the second round.

In both rounds of voting, if there are two textbooks receiving an equal highest number of votes from the subject teachers, the professional team leader decides to choose one of the textbooks with the highest votes.

Minutes are recorded for professional team meetings, noting all reviews, evaluations of the textbooks by the participating subject teachers, and are signed by the professional team leader and the assigned minute taker;

- The professional team leader compiles the results, establishes the list of textbooks chosen by the professional team, signed by the professional team leader and the person assigned to compile the list of textbooks.
