What is the eligibility for graduation from the master's program in Vietnam?

Under Clause 1 Article 12 of the enrolment and training for master's degree issued together with Circular 23/2021/TT-BGDDT, the  eligibility for graduation is as follows:

- Having completed units of study of training program and thesis, scheme defense sufficiently;

- Having foreign language proficiency satisfactory to graduation standard of training program prior to being considered for graduation, evidenced by:

+ One of the degrees or language certificates equivalent to Level 4 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam or other equivalent certificates announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, or

+ Graduate degrees or higher in foreign language majors, or graduate degrees or higher in programs delivered entirely in foreign languages;

- Fulfilling responsibilities according to regulations of education institutions; not being criminally prosecuted and not being placed under academic suspension or discipline.

What is the duration for issuing a master's degree in Vietnam?

Under Clause 2 Article 12 of the enrolment and training for master's degree issued together with Circular 23/2021/TT-BGDDT, the regulation is as follows:

2. Education institutions shall organize consideration and issue decision recognizing graduation within 2 months from the date on which learners successfully defense thesis, schemes; up to 3 months for cases where scheme, thesis appraisal is required.

3. Education institutions shall issue master’s degree for learners within 1 month from the date on which decisions recognizing graduation is issued.

4. The contents on degrees and degree annexes shall conform to regulations of Ministry of Education and Training which specify research orientation program or application orientation program.

5. For learners ineligible for graduation after the learning period under Clause 2 Article 3 hereof, principals or directors of education institutions (hereinafter referred to as "principals") shall issue certificate for units of study accumulated by the learners during training program.

6. Regulations of education institutions shall elaborate on methods of calculating average score of the entire course, procedures for considering and recognizing graduation; retention and issuance of certificate for units of study accumulated for learners who are ineligible for graduation. 

Therefore, the duration for issuing a master's degree is 1 month from the date of the graduation recognition decision.

According to the regulation, the training institution issues the graduation recognition decision within 2 months from the date on which learners successfully defense their thesis, and schemes; up to 3 months for cases where scheme, thesis appraisal is required.

What are the main contents of a master's degree in Vietnam?

Under Article 2 of Circular 27/2019/TT-BGDDT, the main contents recorded on a master's degree include:

- Title:

SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM

Independence – Freedom – Happiness

- Name of the degree depending on education level (bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctor’s degree, degree of equivalent education level).

- Training major.

- Name of the higher education institution that issues the degree.

- Last name, middle name, and first name of the person to whom the degree is issued.

- Date of birth of the person to whom the degree is issued.

- Graduation grade (if any).

- Location and time of issuing the degree.

- Academic title, signature, last name, middle name, and first name of the person entitled to issue the degree and append seal as per the law;

- Degree number and entry number in degree log.

What are the main contents of the appendices of the master's degree in Vietnam?

Under Article 3 of Circular 27/2019/TT-BGDDT and Clause 4 Article 12 of the enrolment and training for master degree issued together with Circular 23/2021/TT-BGDDT, the main contents recorded on the appendices of the master's degree include:

- Information on the person to whom the diploma is issued: last name, middle name, first name, and date of birth.

- Information on the diploma: name of higher education institution that issues the diploma, training discipline, date of enrolment, training language, training duration, training level according to the Vietnamese Qualifications Framework, and training mode.

- Information on training contents and results (if any): name of course or subject, number of credit of each course or subject, grade of the course or subject, total accumulated credits, average score, title and result of theses and dissertations, GPA.

If credits are accumulated from different higher education institutions, specify name of subject, credits thereof, and name of higher education institutions.

- Information connected to the diploma: code of student, learner, researcher; diploma number.

- Research orientation program or application orientation program.
