What are the procedures for re-study application of upper secondary education program in Vietnam?
Under Article 6 of the Regulations on School Transfer and Pupil Receipt in Lower Secondary Schools and Upper Secondary Schools issued with Decision 51/2002/QD-BGDDTon dossiers and procedures for re-study application:
Dossiers and procedures for re-study application
1. Dossiers of re-study application
a/ The re-study application, signed by the pupil concerned.
b/ The study result register of the grade or educational level already completed (the original).
c/ The diploma of the lower educational level (a notarized copy).
d/ The written certification by the administration of the pupils' residence place of his/her observance of the State's policies and laws.
2. Re-study application procedures.
a/ Cases of application for re-study at former schools:
The principals of the schools shall permit the pupils to study at their schools after checking their dossiers.
b/ Cases of application for re-study at other schools:
The dossiers shall be supplemented and procedures be carried out as for pupils changing schools.
c/ Cases of application for re-study at the first grade of the senior secondary education level:
The Director of the Department of Education and Training shall consider and make decisions on the basis of the entrance examination or enrollment consideration results of the pupils before they drop out.
3. The re-study application shall be effected during the summer vocation time before the start of the new school year.
Thus, the procedures for re-study application of upper secondary education program in Vietnam are specified as follows:
Step 1: Prepare a dossier for re-study application, including:
- The re-study application, signed by the pupil concerned.
- The study result register of the grade or educational level already completed (the original).
- The diploma of the lower educational level (a notarized copy).
- The written certification by the administration of the pupils' residence place of his/her observance of the State's policies and laws.
Step 2: Submit the dossier for re-study application as follows:
In case of re-study at the old school, submit the dossier to the school.
In case of re-study at a different school, follow Article 5 of the Regulations on School Transfer and Pupil Receipt in Lower Secondary Schools and Upper Secondary Schools issued with Decision 51/2002/QD-BGDDT as follows:
- If transferring to a school within the same province or city, submit the dossier to the principal of the receiving school.
- If transferring from another province or city, submit the dossier to the Department of Education and Training where the receiving school is located.
Note: The Director of the Department of Education and Training shall consider and make decisions on the basis of the entrance examination or enrollment consideration results of the pupils before they drop out.
The procedures for re-study application are carried out during the summer before the start of the new school year.

Who can apply for re-study of upper secondary education program in Vietnam?
Under Article 4 of the Regulations on School Transfer and Pupil Receipt in Lower Secondary Schools and Upper Secondary Schools issued with Decision 51/2002/QD-BGDDT on persons eligible for school transfer and re-study:
Persons eligible for school transfer and re-study application
1. School transfer:
a) Pupils transferring their place of residence following their parent or guardian.
b) pupils facing particularly difficult family circumstances or having genuinely justified reasons to transfer schools.
2. Re-study application:
Pupils re-studying after a period of absence but still within the stipulated age for each education level.
Thus, upper secondary school pupils re-studying after a period of absence but still within the stipulated age for each education level are eligible for re-study application.
What are the duties of pupils applying for re-study of upper secondary education program in Vietnam?
According to Article 34 of the Charter for lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and combined schools issued with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, similar to regular upper secondary school pupils, pupils applying for re-study of upper secondary education program have the following responsibilities:
- Fulfill their learning and training responsibilities according to the school’s educational program and plan.
- Respect their parents, school staff, teachers, and the elderly; maintain solidarity and assist each other in learning and training; comply with the school’s charter and regulations; observe the State laws.
- Engage in physical training, and maintain personal hygiene.
- Participate in collective activities of the school, class, Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organization, Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union; assist their family, participate in labor and social activities, environmental protection activities, and maintain traffic safety order.
- Protect and preserve the school’s properties and public facilities; contribute to building, protecting, and promoting the school’s traditions.
What is the attire of pupils applying for re-study of upper secondary education program in Vietnam?
According to clause 2, Article 36 of the Charter for lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and multi-level schools issued with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, the attire of pupils applying for re-study of upper secondary education program in Vietnam must meet the following requirements:
- Pupil’s attire must be proper, clean, tidy, appropriate for their age and convenient for learning and other activities at school.
- Depending on the capacity of each school, the school principal may decide whether to let pupils wear uniforms and seek approval from the parent committee of the school.
