Vietnam: Is back-to-school day the first day of school year?
Based on Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT in 2024 regarding the framework for the school year 2024-2025 for preschool, general education, and continuing education issued by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam on August 1, 2024:
- Students will return to school no earlier than one week before the opening ceremony. Particularly for first grade, students can return to school no earlier than two weeks before the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony will be held on September 5, 2024.
Thus, it can be understood that returning to school means students will start attending classes, usually before the opening ceremony, specifically for first grade, no earlier than two weeks before.
As of September 5, 2024, schools will simultaneously hold the opening ceremony.

What Must First Graders Comply With When Returning to School in Vietnam?
According to Article 34 of the Primary School Charter issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT, which stipulates the duties of primary school students, first graders must seriously comply with the following duties when returning to school:
[1] Study and train according to the school's educational plan and regulations; voluntarily study and train to comprehensively develop qualities and abilities according to primary education goals.
[2] Fully and effectively fulfill learning tasks; know how to self-study under the teacher’s guidance; actively participate in experiential activities, applying learned knowledge to real-life situations; exercise, maintain personal hygiene.
[3] Be filial to parents and grandparents; show respect and politeness to teachers and the elderly; be united, loving, and helpful to friends, younger children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those in difficult circumstances.
[4] Comply with school rules, protect school and public property; adhere to traffic safety rules; maintain hygiene and protect the environment.
[5] Contribute to activities building, protecting, and promoting the traditions of the school and locality.
*Encouragement: Parents should also share responsibility and guide their children to perform their duties when participating in the learning environment.
What are the Principles for First Graders' Uniforms in Vietnam?
At the start of the new school year, according to regulations, schools do not require parents and students to buy new uniforms, they just need to be clean and neat. However, in practice, most parents still purchase uniforms for their children each school year.
Article 3 of Circular 26/2009/TT-BGDDT provides principles for wearing uniforms as follows:
Principles for Wearing Uniforms and Ceremonial Clothing
1. Principles for Wearing Uniforms
a) Ensure aesthetics, suitability with students' gender and age, national cultural identity, characteristics of each locality, as well as stability, reflecting the school's traditions.
b) Suitable for weather conditions, convenient for studying, living at school, and participating in other activities.
c) Ensure cost-effectiveness, suitable for the economic and social conditions of each locality and each school.
2. Principles for Wearing Ceremonial Clothing
a) Ensure consistency within each school or each education sector.
b) Ensure aesthetics, and educational value in graduation ceremonies.
c) Distinguish between graduates of different educational levels: secondary, university.
d) Ensure scientific integrity, reflecting the beautiful cultural traditions of Vietnam.
3. In cases where funding is sponsored by organizations or individuals domestically or internationally, uniforms and ceremonial clothing must comply with this document's regulations and should not be exploited for advertising.
4. Encourage ethnic minority students to use their ethnic costumes on holidays, festivals, and on days when the school does not require uniforms.
Thus, in accordance with regulations, first graders usually prepare uniforms such as trousers and white shirts or specific attire as required by each school's regulations.
Additionally, first graders' uniforms must adhere to the following principles:
