According to Article 3 of Circular 48/2011/TT-BGDDT of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, the working time of preschool teachers is as follows:
Working time and annual leave time of teachers
1. The working time in a year for preschool teachers is 42 weeks, including:
a) 35 weeks for fostering, caring for, and educating children (commonly referred to as teaching children);
b) 4 weeks for professional training and development;
c) 2 weeks for preparation for the new school year;
d) 1 week for summing up the school year.
2. The annual leave time of preschool teachers includes: summer vacation and other days off. Specifically:
a) The summer vacation for teachers is 8 weeks, fully paid with allowances and bonuses (if any);
b) Other days off as stipulated by the Labor Code and current regulations.
Based on the academic year's plan, scale, characteristics, specific conditions of each school, the Principal shall arrange annual leave for teachers appropriately.
Thus, the working time of preschool teachers will be 42 weeks per year, in which:
- 35 weeks for fostering, caring for, and educating children (commonly referred to as teaching children);
- 4 weeks for professional training and development;
- 2 weeks for preparation for the new school year;
- 1 week for summing up the school year.
Therefore, in one year, preschool teachers will teach for 35 weeks.

What are the specific teaching hours of preschool teachers per day and per week?
According to Article 4 of Circular 48/2011/TT-BGDDT, teaching hours of teachers are as follows:
- For teachers teaching groups of children or kindergarten classes that have two sessions a day, each teacher must teach on the class for a full 6 hours a day and perform tasks for class preparation as well as other tasks as stipulated by the Principal to ensure working 40 hours a week.
- For teachers teaching groups of children or kindergarten classes that have one session a day, each teacher must teach on the class for a full 4 hours a day and perform tasks for class preparation as well as other tasks as stipulated by the Principal to ensure working 40 hours a week.
- For teachers teaching inclusive education classes with disabled children, each teacher must meet the prescribed teaching hours in paragraph 1 or 2 of this Article; for each disabled child per class, each teacher is counted an additional 0.5 hours of teaching per day.
- For Principals and Vice Principals, besides performing duties as per the regulations on preschool, Principals must directly participate in educational activities (teaching children or observing the teaching by other teachers in the school) 2 hours a week; Vice Principals must directly participate 4 hours a week.
What is the formula for calculating overtime pay for preschool teachers?
According to paragraph 1, Article 4 of Joint Circular 07/2013/TTLT-BGDDT-BNV-BTC, the calculation of overtime pay is as follows:
(1) The formula for calculating overtime pay:
- Overtime pay per academic year = extra hours taught per academic year x pay per extra hour;
- Pay per extra hour = pay per teaching hour x 150%;
- Pay per teaching hour:
+ For preschool teachers, general education teachers, vocational education teachers, and lecturers:
For educators doing administrative work or assigned as Team Leaders, Youth Union, or Association officers at preschool, general education, vocational education institutions, it shall be calculated using the above formula where the teaching hours per year standard is for teachers of the same level, subject of that educational institution;
+ For university lecturers, training institutions of Ministries, Ministry-equivalent agencies, government agencies, Political Schools of provinces and centrally managed cities:
For educators doing managerial work, Youth Union, Association officers participating in teaching at universities, training institutions of Ministries, Ministry-equivalent agencies, government agencies, Political Schools of provinces and centrally managed cities, it shall be calculated using the above formula where the standard teaching hours per year are those of lecturers of the same title, subject of that educational institution;
- Extra hours taught per academic year = [actual teaching hours per academic year + converted teaching hours per academic year (if any) + additional teaching hours per academic year (if any) + reduced teaching hours per policies per academic year (if any)] - (standard teaching hours per year).
