Vietnam: Can students who passed university entrance exams but were drafted for military service get their admission results deferred?

According to point a, clause 1, Article 10 of the Regulations on University Admission and College Admission for Preschool Education in Vietnam issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT, the regulations are as follows:

Deferral of Admission Results

  1. Admitted students who have admission notices can have their admission results deferred in the following cases:

a) Drafted for military service or youth volunteer service immediately in the year of admission as per the decision or orders of competent authorities;

b) Severely ill or seriously injured and unable to enroll on time, provided they have medical records and confirmation from competent medical authorities.

  1. Students eligible under clause 1 must submit a deferral request along with evidence to the education institution calling them to enroll. The maximum deferral period is determined by the educational institution but must not be less than 3 years for those defined in point a, clause 1 of this Article.

  2. Once the conditions for returning to study are met, students with deferred admission results must complete the enrollment procedures as stipulated by the educational institution, including providing evidence of completed service or recovery. For cases defined in clause 1 of this Article with a deferral period of 3 years or more, the educational institution should consider introducing the student to preparatory classes for review before official enrollment.

Thus, students who have passed the university entrance exams and received their admission notice but were drafted for service in the year of admission can have their admission results deferred. The deferral period must not be less than 3 years.

Can students who passed university entrance exams but haven't confirmed enrollment register for additional admission rounds in Vietnam?

According to clause 2, Article 22 of the Regulations on University Admission and College Admission for Preschool Education in Vietnam issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT, the regulations are as follows:

Organization of Registration and Admissions for Additional Rounds

  1. Based on the admission targets and the number of admitted students who have confirmed enrollment in various programs, the admission council of the educational institution shall decide on conducting additional admission rounds. The institution shall announce the additional admission plans, methods, and registration forms; the admission conditions for different programs and methods must not be lower than the conditions of the previous rounds.

  2. Students who did not pass or who passed but have not confirmed enrollment at any place can register for additional admission rounds according to the institution's plan and guidelines.

  3. At the end of each admission round, the institution shall announce on their website the admission results (and any additional conditions or criteria, if any) for various programs via different admission methods; provide tools for students to check their admission results personally; and send admission notices and instructions to admitted students for enrollment.

Thus, students who have passed university entrance exams but haven't confirmed enrollment can register for additional admission rounds according to the institution's plan and guidelines.

Can students who were admitted directly confirm enrollment earlier than the general schedule in Vietnam?

According to clause 3, Article 17 of the Regulations on University Admission and College Admission for Preschool Education in Vietnam issued together with Circular 08/2022/TT-BGDDT, the regulations are as follows:

Organization of Direct Admission and Selection

  1. Based on the publicized admission plan, the educational institution shall organize the registration for eligible students for direct admission as per Article 8 of these regulations either online or directly at the institution.

  2. The institution shall carry out direct admission for eligible students and announce the results according to the general schedule.

3. Students admitted directly can confirm their enrollment early (when eligible) or according to the general schedule like other students; the institution cannot compel these students to confirm enrollment earlier than the general schedule.

  1. Students admitted directly who have not confirmed enrollment can still use their right to register for regular admission on the common system to have additional chances for admission like other students.

Thus, students admitted directly can confirm enrollment earlier than the general schedule when eligible. However, the institution cannot compel students to confirm enrollment earlier than the general schedule.
