How many days can 12th-grade students in Vietnam take off in the 2024-2025 academic year?
Under the provisions of Article 12 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDTon grade advancement, re-assessment during summer break, and grade retention:
Grade advancement, re-assessment during summer break, and grade retention
1. A student who meets following eligibility may advance to the next grade or be recognized as to have completed lower education program or upper education program:
a) Training results of the entire school year (including re-assessment results after training during summer break according to Article 13 hereof) are Qualified or higher.
b) Learning results of the entire school year (including re-assessment results of all subjects according to Article 14 hereof) is Qualified or higher.
c) Number of days leave does not exceed 45 half-days (calculated according to education plans which is 1 half-day for every day under formal education plan, including permitted leave, unpermitted leave, continuous leave, and intermittent leave).
2. In case a student must undergo training during summer break, comply with Article 13 hereof; students must attend re-examination or re-assessment of subjects during summer break as per Article 14 hereof.
3. A student who does not meet all eligibility under Clause 1 of this Article are not allowed to advance to the next grade or recognized as to have completed lower secondary education level or upper secondary education level.
4. For students with disabilities: Principals shall rely on assessment results of students with disabilities as per Article 11 hereof to consider grade advancement or recognition of completion of lower secondary education level or upper secondary education level.
Additionally, according to Article 21 of Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT, the entry into force is stipulated as follows:

1. This Circular comes into force from September 5, 2021 according to following roadmap:
- From school year of 2021-2022 for the 6th grade.
- From school year of 2022-2023 for the 7th and 10th grade.
- From school year of 2023-2024 for the 8th and 11th grade.
- From school year of 2024-2025 for the 9th and 12th grade.
2. This Circular replaces Circular No. 58/2011/TT-BGDDT dated December 12, 2021 of Minister of Education and Training and Circular No. 26/2020/TT-BGDDT dated August 26, 2020 on amendment to Regulations on assessment and classification of lower secondary students and upper secondary students attached to Circular No. 58/2011/TT-BGDDT dated December 12, 2021 of Minister of Education and Training according to roadmap under Clause 1 of this Article.
Thus, 12th-grade students are allowed a maximum of 45 half-days off in the 2024-2025 academic year (including permitted leave, unpermitted leave, continuous leave, and intermittent leave).
*Note: The above number of days off does not include public holidays that 12th-grade students are entitled to as per legal regulations.

Shall 12th-grade students taking more than 45 half-days off in Vietnam be eligible for graduation assessment?
Under Clause 1, Article 12 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations attached to Circular 15/2020/TT-BGDDTon candidates and eligibility requirements for the exam in Vietnam:
Candidates and eligibility requirements for the exam
1. Candidates include:
a) Students who have finished the high school program in the year of exam;
b) Those who had finished the high school program but have yet taken or did not pass the high school graduation exams of previous years;
c) Those who obtain high school graduation diplomas or Diploma Level 4 of VQF/ Intermediate Professional Education Diploma now take the exam as the basis for university and college admission;
d) Other special cases subject to decision of the Minister of MOET.
2. Eligibility requirements for examination:
a) Candidates prescribed in point a clause 1 of this Article must also meet the requirements that in 12th grade their conduct must be classified as Average and above and academic performance must not be classified as Poor. The classification of conduct is not required for continuing education learners in guided self-study mode and learners with no requirements of conduct classification.
Thus, persons eligible for taking the high school graduation exam are ones who have completed the upper secondary program.
Therefore, if 12th-grade students are absent for more than 45 half-days in the academic year, they will not be eligible to take the high school graduation exam, i.e. graduation assessment.
What are the duties of 12th-grade students in Vietnam?
According to the provisions of Article 34 of the Regulations on lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and multi-level schools issued together with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT, 12th-grade students in Vietnam have the following duties:
- Learn and train according to curricula and education plans of their schools.
- Respect their parents, officials, teachers and staff of their schools, and those older than them; maintain solidarity and mutual support in learning and training; conform to the charter and rules of their schools; and abide by the law.
- Take exercises and maintain personal hygiene.
- Participate in group activities of their schools and classes, Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organization and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union; help their families, join physical and social activities and environmental protection activities, and maintain traffic order and safety.
- Protect school and public property; contribute to fostering, preservation and enhancement of school traditions.
