According to Section 4 of the General education program in English issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required outcomes for students after completing English curricula at the upper secondary level in Vietnam are as follows:
(1) General competencies and traits:
The general education program in English contributes to the formation and development of essential traits (patriotism, kindness, diligence, honesty, responsibility) and general competencies (autonomy and self-study, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity).
(2) Required outcomes regarding specific competence at the upper secondary level:
- After completing English curricula at the upper secondary level, students can achieve an English proficiency level of B1 in the 6-level Framework of Foreign Language Proficiency for Vietnam.
+ Be able to understand the main points of a clear standard speech or text on familiar topics in work, school, leisure, etc; handle most situations likely to arise where the language is used.
+ Be able to write simple text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
+ Be able to describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.”
(3) Through the English subject, students gain a deeper understanding of the land, people, and culture of English-speaking countries and other countries around the world:
- Understand and respect cultural diversity, and initially reflect the value of Vietnamese culture in English;
- Develop traits such as love for the country, and people, honesty, kindness, and responsibility towards the environment and community.
