According to the General Education Program for Fine Arts attached to Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the provisions are as follows:

SUBJECT CHARACTERISTICS

Fine Arts is a subject within the field of arts education. In the general education program, Fine Arts develops students' artistic ability, an expression of aesthetic abilities in the field of Fine Arts; while contributing with other subjects and educational activities to form and develop in students the essential qualities and common competencies, especially raising awareness to inherit and promote national cultural art in harmony with the development of the era.

The fine arts education content is divided into two stages: basic education and career-oriented education.

- Basic education stage: Fine Arts is a mandatory subject from grade 1 to grade 9. The program creates opportunities for students to familiarize themselves with and experience artistic knowledge through various activities; forming and developing in students the ability to observe and appreciate art, recognize and express the world; the ability to perceive and explore cultural and aesthetic values in life and art.

- Career-oriented education stage: Fine Arts is an elective subject based on students' aspirations and career orientation. The content of arts education is expanded, developing the knowledge and skills formed in the basic education stage, approaching vocations related to visual arts and practical applications; helping students develop independent thinking, critical and analytical skills, and creative art; understanding the role and application of fine arts in life; creating a foundation for students to explore and have career orientations suitable to their reality and social needs.

The Fine Arts under the General Education Program 2018 is a compulsory subject from grade 1 to grade 9.

Thus, students from grade 1 to grade 9 must study Fine Arts.

What is the core educational content of the Fine Arts curriculum in Vietnam?

Under Section 5 of the General Education Program for Fine Arts issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the Fine Arts curriculum develops two main content streams: Creative Arts and Applied Arts, where the foundation of basic knowledge is based on elements and principles of art creation.

At the primary level, educational content includes Theory and History of Fine Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, and Handicrafts; in it, the content on Theory and History of Fine Arts is limited to getting acquainted with authors, products, works, cultural art heritage, and is introduced, integrated into the practice and discussion of fine arts.

At the lower secondary level, educational content includes Theory and History of Fine Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, and Graphic Design; in it, the content on Theory and History of Fine Arts is limited to exploring authors, products, works, cultural art heritage, and is introduced, integrated into the practice and discussion of fine arts.

At the upper secondary level, students in grades 10, 11, and 12 can choose 4 out of 10 content areas including Theory and History of Fine Arts, Painting, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Stage and Film Art Design, Multimedia Art Design, Architecture; in it, the content on Theory and History of Fine Arts is carried out independently while ensuring integration into the practice and discussion of fine arts.
