What is the regulatory age for 4th-grade students in Vietnam?
According to Article 33 of the Charter issued with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT on the age of primary school students:
Age of Primary School Students
1. The age for students entering first grade is 6 years old calculated according to the calendar year. Children with disabilities, those lagging in physical or intellectual development, children from particularly disadvantaged areas, ethnic minority children, orphans without support, children returning from abroad, children of foreigners studying or working in Vietnam may enter first grade at an older age as stipulated but not exceeding 3 years. Cases where children enter first grade exceeding this age are decided by the Head of the Education and Training Department.
2. Primary school students can study at a higher age than prescribed due to grade repetition, living in particularly disadvantaged areas, ethnic minority status, physical or intellectual disabilities, orphans with no place of support, returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.
Thus, typically, the age of students entering the first grade is 6 and if they progress annually, they would be 9 years old in the 4th grade.
However, 4th-grade students may be older than the regulatory age in cases of retaining a grade, living in particularly disadvantaged areas, being ethnic minorities, having disabilities, experiencing delays in physical or intellectual development, being orphans, returning from abroad, and other legal provisions.
