Is Mathematics a mandatory subject in the 7th-grade curriculum in Vietnam?
According to Section IV of the General Education Program issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT on the education plan at the lower secondary level:
- The general education program is divided into two phases: the basic education phase (from Grade 1 to Grade 9) and the career-oriented education phase (from Grade 10 to Grade 12).
- The system of subjects and educational activities of the general education program includes compulsory subjects and educational activities, career-oriented elective subjects (abbreviated as elective subjects), and optional subjects.
- The actual study time in a school year is equivalent to 35 weeks. Educational institutions can organize teaching in one session/day or two sessions/day. Both one-session/day and two-session/day educational institutions must implement the unified compulsory educational content for all educational institutions nationwide.
- The educational content and teaching duration for the lower secondary level are as follows:
+ Educational content
Compulsory subjects and educational activities: Literature; Mathematics; Foreign Language 1; Civic Education; History and Geography; Natural Sciences; Technology; Informatics; Physical Education; Arts (Music, Fine Arts); Career Orientation, experiential activities; Local educational content.
Optional subjects: Ethnic minority language, Foreign Language 2.
+ Teaching Duration
Daily one-session classes should not exceed 5 lessons; each lesson lasts 45 minutes. Eligible lower secondary schools are encouraged to implement two-session/day teaching as guided by the Ministry of Education and Training.

What are the educational objectives of Mathematics at the lower secondary level in Vietnam?
Under Section IV of the General Education Program for Mathematics issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the educational objectives of Mathematics at the lower secondary level in Vietnam are as follows:
- Contributing to the formation and development of mathematical competence with the required outcomes: posing and answering questions when reasoning, solving problems, performing reasonable arguments when solving problems, proving mathematical propositions that are not too complex; using mathematical models (mathematical formulas, algebraic equations, diagrams, etc.) to describe situations appearing in some practical math problems that are not too complex; using mathematical language combined with regular language to express mathematical content as well as reasoning methods and results; presenting ideas and ways to use tools and resources for learning mathematics to perform a learning task or to express mathematical reasoning and proofs.
- Acquiring fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills about:
+ Numbers and Algebra: Number system (from natural numbers to real numbers); calculations and the use of calculation tools; algebraic language and symbols; transformation of algebraic expressions, equations, system of equations, inequalities; using function language to describe (model) some processes and phenomena in practice.
+ Geometry and Measurement: The content of Geometry and Measurement at this level includes Visual Geometry and Plane Geometry. Visual Geometry continues to provide languages, symbols, and descriptions (at the visual level) of practical objects (plane shapes, solid shapes); creating some common geometric models; calculating some geometric elements; developing spatial imagination; and solving some simple practical problems associated with Geometry and Measurement. Plane Geometry provides knowledge and skills (at the level of logical reasoning) about geometric relations and some common plane shapes (points, lines, segments, angles, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles).
+ Statistics and Probability: Collecting, classifying, displaying, analyzing, and processing statistical data; analyzing statistical data through frequency, and relative frequency; recognizing some simple statistical laws in practice; using statistics to understand basic concepts about the experimental probability of an event and the probability of an event; recognizing the significance of probability in practical contexts.
- Helping students gain preliminary insights into professions related to Mathematics; having awareness of career orientation based on abilities and interests, conditions, and personal circumstances; orienting the stream after middle school (continuing education, vocational training, or engaging in labor life).
