Sample No. 1

Christopher Columbus (1451 - 1506) was an Italian explorer serving Spain. He is famous for discovering America in 1492 while attempting to find a westward route to Asia across the Atlantic Ocean.

1. Why did Columbus explore?

At that time, trade routes from Europe to Asia (specifically India, China) were very challenging due to the necessity of circumnavigating Africa or facing numerous threats from pirates and wars. Columbus believed that by heading west by sea, he could reach Asia faster.

He sought funding from several countries, but only Spain (under King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) agreed to help him undertake this voyage.

2. The journey to discover America

On August 3, 1492, Columbus and three ships, the Santa María, Niña, and Pinta, left Spain. After more than two months at sea, in the early morning of October 12, 1492, a sailor reported they had sighted land!

Columbus set foot on an island in what is now the Bahamas, naming it San Salvador. He thought he was close to India, hence he called the native people there "Indians."

He continued his journey, discovering other lands such as Cuba and Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Columbus was overjoyed to have found new lands and quickly returned to Spain with the news.

3. Subsequent voyages

After his return, Columbus embarked on three more voyages (from 1493 - 1504) to explore more areas of the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. However, he never realized he had discovered a new continent and continued to believe he was in Asia.

4. Columbus and the controversies

Today, Columbus is recognized as the man who connected America with Europe, initiating an era of global exploration. However, he is also criticized for exploiting and oppressing the native people, introducing diseases, and starting the colonial invasion period in America.

Nevertheless, Columbus's journey remains one of the most significant events in world history, radically changing the dynamic of continents and ushering in a new era in human history.
