What are the objectives of the English curricula in Vietnam?

Under Section 3 of the General Education Program for English (grades 3 to 12) issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of the English curricula at the upper secondary level are as follows:

After completing the English curricula at the upper secondary level, students can:

- Use English as a communication tool through four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing to meet basic and practical communication needs on familiar topics related to school, recreational activities, career, etc.

- Continue to develop basic knowledge of English, including phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar; through English, gain a deeper understanding of the countries, people, and cultures of English-speaking countries and countries around the world, understand and respect cultural diversity, and initially reflect Vietnamese cultural values in English.

- Use English to enhance the learning quality of other subjects in the general education program.

- Use English to pursue higher education goals or engage in work immediately after high school.

- Apply various learning methods to manage study time, use information technology in learning and self-study, strengthen self-study methods, self-assess and take responsibility for learning results, and develop lifelong learning habits.

What are the regulations assessing the learning results of primary school students in Foreign Language subjects in Vietnam?

According to point c, sub-section 2, Section 2 of Official Dispatch 3818/BGDDT-GDTH guiding the organization of teaching foreign language subjects at the primary level, the learning results of primary school students in Foreign Language subjects in Vietnam are assessed as follows:

- The assessment of learning results of students for foreign language subjects shall follow the primary student assessment regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

- Assessment of learning results of students for foreign language subjects should focus on building confidence, enhancing motivation, and encouraging efforts in learning and practice. This assessment helps teachers adjust their teaching methods and techniques.

Assess the formation and development of essential qualities, general competencies of students, and specific competencies of the subject as stipulated in the program.

Focus mainly on regular assessment with diverse and appropriate assessment techniques.

Conduct periodic assessments gently, suitable for the psychological age of students, and without creating stress.

Periodic question papers must include all skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with a proportion of these skills, types of tasks, quantity, and the level of awareness of the questions that are appropriate to the teaching and learning of teachers and students and ensure the requirements set by the subject's curriculum.
