What is our army's first major counter-offensive campaign during the resistance war against the French that is victory?
Our army's first major counter-offensive campaign during the resistance war against the French colonialists was the Viet Bac Autumn - Winter Campaign of 1947.
This was one of the important victories, marking the significant maturity of our military and people in the early stages of the resistance. The victory of the campaign contributed to thwarting the French colonialists' scheme of "quick fight, quick win", firmly protecting the headquarters of the resistance, the Viet Bac base - the cradle of the Vietnamese revolution, and preserving the main forces to continue the protracted struggle.
In October 1947, the French colonialists decided to launch a large-scale military operation with the ambition of destroying our resistance headquarters, obliterating the Viet Bac base, annihilating main forces, and sealing the Vietnam-China border to prevent support from socialist countries. With this scheme, the French hoped to quickly secure a decisive victory, ending the resistance and crushing the revolutionary movement of the Vietnamese people.
Facing this dangerous scheme, the Central Communist Party and President Ho Chi Minh led our military and people to resolutely counteract, concentrating all forces and intellect to crush the French colonialists' scheme. With the spirit of determined battle, smart creativity, along with brilliant military art "using the weak to fight the strong, the small to defeat the large, the few to overwhelm the many," we gradually escaped from the unfavorable position, transformed the situation, and regained strategic initiative.
The Viet Bac Autumn - Winter Campaign of 1947 succeeded in weakening and destroying enemy forces, protecting the strategic base, and leaving many valuable lessons in campaign art, particularly the art of transforming the battlefield in unfavorable conditions. This was the first time our army conducted combat operations over a large area, skillfully combining the main forces and local people, ambushes, raids with guerrilla warfare.
The victory of the Viet Bac Campaign not only defeated the French colonialists' "quick fight, quick win" scheme but also consolidated our people's faith in the leadership of the Communist Party and President Ho Chi Minh, while elevating the position of the Vietnamese revolution on the international stage. This victory also marked a leap in the growth of our army in terms of technique, tactics, and the ability to organize coordinated operations, paving the way for important campaigns in the prolonged resistance against the French colonialists.
