Students can refer to the following sample contest entries about characters that have inspired readers from works they have read, guiding them towards a positive lifestyle, taking social responsibility, and awakening the desire to contribute and develop the country in the Reading Culture Ambassador Contest 2024:

Character Chi Dau

The character Chi Dau in the work "Tat Den" by Ngo Tat To is a profound symbol of Vietnamese women in the old society. Chi Dau is depicted as a poor peasant woman who endures many oppressions and injustices from the feudal society of her time. However, she possesses a strong soul and an indomitable will, not succumbing to fate.

Chi Dau shows boundless love for her husband and children, ready to sacrifice and endure suffering to protect her family. Chi Dau's most outstanding feature is her strong uprising in the excerpt "Tuc Nuoc Vo Bo", where she dared to stand up against the tax collectors to protect her husband. This act not only demonstrates courage but also embodies the spirit of struggle against oppression and injustice.

Chi Dau is also the image of a gentle, honest Vietnamese woman, diligent in her work, always loving and caring for her husband. Yet, when circumstances pushed her to the limits, she showed hidden strength, ready to break down all barriers to protect her loved ones.

Through the character of Chi Dau, Ngo Tat To profoundly and authentically reflects the miserable life of peasants under feudal domination, while expressing admiration for the inner strength and resistance of women. Chi Dau is not only a quintessential character in literature but also an inspiration for those seeking strength to overcome difficulties and fight for justice.

Characters A Phu and Mi

A Phu and Mi are the main characters in the work "Vo Chong A Phu" by the writer To Hoai, representing the image of impoverished mountain people oppressed and exploited by feudal rulers. Although sharing the same fate, each character bears distinct traits in personality and awakening process.

A Phu is a young, brave, and courageous man, with self-respect and a strong yearning for freedom. However, because he had no money to pay debts to the feudal lord, A Phu became a slave, enduring much hardship, humiliation, and terrible treatment. When tied and brutally beaten by A Su, A Phu resisted fiercely, showing a strong protest spirit, unwilling to endure an oppressed fate. The character A Phu transitions from oppression and exploitation, always yearning for freedom and happiness, from a dark life to a life full of joy and from slavery to a warrior fighting to protect his homeland.

A Phu's awakening is an expression of latent vitality, a strong protest consciousness of the working people against oppression and exploitation. Through the images of A Phu and Mi, the work "Vo Chong A Phu" praises the beauty of the soul of the working class and affirms the value of freedom.

Additionally, readers can easily relate to wretched fates like Mi and A Phu that have been seen in the work “Tat Den” by Ngo Tat To, where the character Chi Dau courageously escaped the oppressive household in the dark night like her bleak life, with hopes of a happy ending for those unfortunate lives illuminated by the Revolution.

Character Phuong Dinh

Mentioning Vietnamese literary works about the theme of war, we cannot overlook "Nhung Ngoi Sao Xa Xoi" by writer Le Minh Khue. In this work, the character Phuong Dinh deeply impressed me with her beautiful soul and noble qualities of a young soldier.

As an elegant girl from Hanoi, Phuong Dinh volunteered for the military with a very dangerous task: filling bomb craters on the Truong Son route. Amidst the mist of bombs, shrapnel flying, the young girl maintained her beauty and youthfulness. Her beauty is not only in her soft long hair and brown eyes that squint as if dazzled by sunlight but also emanates from her innocent, carefree, and optimistic nature. She is full of affection for her comrades and hometown, exceedingly optimistic and full of zest for life. Like her two comrades in the reconnaissance team, Phuong Dinh cherishes her comrades in her team and unit. Particularly, she cherishes and admires all the soldiers she encounters nightly at the front-line roads. Amidst fierce bomb smoke, Phuong Dinh's soul is nurtured by her affection for her comrades and country. She loves those who work alongside her each day. She even cherishes those she meets once nightly at the focal point of the roads leading to the front, people she might only encounter once. Drawing from her love for everyone, Phuong Dinh sensitively notices the beauty of her comrades, resonating with their preferences and moods. She faces bombs with composure, even with a hint of playfulness. When comrades sacrifice their lives, Phuong Dinh feels pain but never collapses. She continues to fight, dedicating her efforts to the Fatherland with courage and a steadfast will.

Through the character Phuong Dinh, we see the hardships and struggles of the young volunteer girls. At the same time, we see the beauty within their souls. They are like stars in the night sky, always glowing brightly.

Phuong Dinh is a beautiful image, emblematic of the young Vietnamese generation during the period of resistance against the US to save the country. She is a "distant star" but always shines brightly, contributing to making the sky of her homeland more splendid.
