What is the sample analysis essay on the poem "Thương vợ" for 11th-grade students in Vietnam?

The poem "Thương vợ" by Tran Te Xuong is a representative piece that reflects the author's love and respect for his diligent and sacrificing wife. To analyze the poem "Thương vợ," it is essential to focus on the ideological content, artistic imagery, and the profound meanings conveyed by the work.

Students can refer to the following sample analysis essay on the poem "Thương vợ" for 11th-grade students in Vietnam:

Tu Xuong, an outstanding satirical poet of medieval literature. He belonged to the last generation of Confucian scholars, living in a transitional period when the feudal era was declining, the values of the past were gradually disappearing, and the new values had not yet taken shape, with traditional beauty gradually breaking apart. Therefore, his poetry is full of melancholy and bitterness. However, the satirical feature in his poetry is only the "left leg" while the "right leg" remains the lyrical essence.

His poetry is always fraught with broader societal concerns and narrower family matters, particularly with respect to his devoted wife, Ba Tu. The poem "Thương vợ" fully demonstrates the lyrical quality as well as the satirical nature of his poetry. Writing about the wife is rarely seen in old poetry, especially when the wife is still alive.

For Tu Xuong, he not only wrote about his wife but also had an entire subject dedicated to Ba Tu: Dau mat, Van te song vo, Hoi minh,... These showcase the significant place and meaning of his wife in his life. The two opening lines introduce Ba Tu and her great contribution to the family:

"Quanh năm buôn bán ở mom sông

Nuôi đủ năm con với một chồng"

Tu Xuong accurately depicts Ba Tu’s profession as trading rice by the river. Her work repeats consistently all year without any rest or time for herself. The working environment is dangerous. Ba Tu has to work hard throughout the year, facing numerous hardships, as she is the pillar of the family.

She not only has to raise the children but also has to support her husband. Thus, she has to feed six mouths within the family. In the poem, Tu Xuong differentiates himself from the five children, acknowledging the burden he places on his wife, even more than the children. While the children only require basic needs like food and clothing, Tu Xuong also expects his recreational desires to be fulfilled. The line evinces a self-mocking smile.

Ba Tu’s hardships and struggles continue to be emphasized in the next two lines: “Lặn lội than co khi quang vắng/ Eo seo mat nước buổi do dong.” The inversion: bringing "lan loi" "eo seo" to the beginning, deepens Ba Tu’s difficulties and toil in life. “Do dong” evokes the danger in daily travel and trade "Song sau cho loi, do day cho qua."

Ba Tu is described through the metaphorical “than co,” full of haunting, depicting her small, vulnerable, and pitiable figure. The image of the lặn lội cò in folklore literature illustrates the diligence and hard work of laborers, simultaneously evoking empathy in people. Lines 3 and 4 with the metaphorical “than co” combined with the visually descriptive word “lan loi” emphasize Ba Tu’s arduous life.

Marital destiny is predetermined by fate, while "debt" is a burden; if a couple has a good life, that is fate, and a contrarian, unfortunate life is debt. In the line: "Mot duyen hai no au dinh phan/ Nam nang muoi mua dam quan cong," fate with the husband is little while debt with each other is much.

Tu Xuong recognizes himself as the debt and burden on Ba Tu’s life. However, Ba Tu does not complain but sacrifices selflessly, naturally, without demanding or blaming Tu Xuong. With the first six lines, Tu Xuong truthfully and fully portrays Ba Tu's diligent, loving, and tough nature toward her family. It is only in the final two lines that Tu Xuong’s image emerges:

"Cha mẹ thói đời ăn ở bạc

Có chồng hờ hững cũng như không!"

A harsh scolding is directed at life and is also self-criticism. "Thoi doi" – the harsh rules of feudal policies, the discrimination, the patriarchal society that relegates family and livelihood duties to women. It is the semi-colonial, semi-feudal society that gave birth to deceptive habits and irrational injustices. The scolding arises from Tu Xuong’s boundless love and gratitude for his wife.

The work is a Vietnamese adaptation of the seven-word eight-line poem form. Tu Xuong harmoniously blends the lyrical and satirical qualities, with the lyrical being dominant to express deep gratitude towards his wife. This is also Tu Xuong’s unique and distinctive feature in his poetry. The language of the poem is simple, like everyday speech. The familiar, simple imagery gives the poem a natural and sincere beauty but with a strong emotional impact.

Despite the short length of the poem, Tu Xuong has provided complete and thorough depictions of Ba Tu's virtuous character and her noble sacrifice for the family. Also, these are satirical verses about his impotence. Furthermore, the poem is also successful in many aspects: language, imagery, and the blend of satire and lyricism.
