What is the age of students at each educational level in Vietnam?
According to Article 28 of the Education Law 2019 on the age of general education:
Educational Levels and Age of General Education
- The educational levels and age of general education are prescribed as follows:
a) Primary education is carried out over 05 school years, from grade one to the end of grade five. The age of students starting grade one is 06 years old, calculated by the year;
b) Lower secondary education is carried out over 04 school years, from grade six to the end of grade nine. Students starting grade six should have completed primary education. The age of students starting grade six is 11 years old, calculated by the year;
c) Upper secondary education is carried out over 03 school years, from grade ten to the end of grade twelve. Students starting grade ten must have a lower secondary diploma. The age of students starting grade ten is 15 years old, calculated by the year.
- Students are allowed to study at a higher or lower age than the prescribed age in the following cases:
a) Students with early intellectual development who study in advanced classes;
b) Students who study at higher ages than the prescribed age due to repeating grades, living in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, being ethnic minorities, being disabled, having poor physical or intellectual development, being orphans without support, coming from poor households, returning from overseas, and other cases as prescribed by law.
- General education is divided into the basic education phase and the career orientation phase. The basic education phase includes primary and lower secondary education; the career orientation phase is upper secondary education. Students in vocational education institutions are taught the knowledge of upper secondary education.
- The Minister of Education and Training prescribes the teaching and learning of Vietnamese for ethnic minority children before entering grade one; the teaching of upper secondary knowledge in vocational education institutions; and the cases prescribed in Clause 2 of this Article.
Thus, the age of students at each educational level is as follows:
- The age of students starting grade one is 06 years old, calculated by the year;
- The age of students starting grade six is 11 years old, calculated by the year;
- The age of students starting grade ten is 15 years old, calculated by the year.
* The age of students can be higher or lower than the prescribed age if they study in advanced classes, repeat grades, live in particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, are ethnic minorities, disabled, have poor physical or intellectual development, are orphans without support, come from poor households, return from overseas, and other cases as prescribed by law.
