Topic 11.1. Gravitational Field
Concept of the gravitational field
- Provide examples proving the existence of the Earth's gravitational force.
- Discuss (through diagrams, multimedia materials) and indicate: All objects with mass create a gravitational field around them; A gravitational field is a force field created by a mass, existing around a mass and exerting gravitational force on a mass placed within it.
Gravitational force
- Indicate: When considering the gravitational field at a point outside a uniform sphere, the sphere's mass can be regarded as concentrated at its center.
- Apply Newton's law of gravitation F = Gm1m2/r² for some simple motion cases within the gravitational field.
Gravitational field intensity
- Define gravitational field intensity.
- From the law of gravitation and the definition of gravitational field intensity, derive the equation g = GM/r² for simple cases.
- Apply the equation g = GM/r² to evaluate some simple phenomena regarding the gravitational field.
- State that at each location near the Earth's surface, within a not-too-high altitude range, g is constant.
Gravitational potential and gravitational potential energy
- Discuss (through images, multimedia materials) to define the gravitational potential at a point in the gravitational field.
- Apply the equation ϕ = - GM/r in simple cases.
- Briefly explain the geostationary satellite motion and derive the formula for the first cosmic velocity.
