Under Section 5 of the Appendix of the General Education Program for English issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the English Language knowledge required at the primary education level in Vietnam includes:

Phonetics The contents of phonetics teaching at the primary education level are represented in two fields: spoken language and written language.

- Spoken language: vowels, consonants, and some consonant clusters; word stress, sentence stress, and basic intonation.

- Written language: the corresponding relationship between sounds and letters for spelling, reading, and correctly writing learned words and phrases.
Vocabulary The contents of vocabulary teaching at the primary education level include common, simple, and specific words in Level 1 English that serve communicative situations within the scope of the system of thematic and topical units of the Program. The number of vocabulary words required at the primary education level is approximately 600 - 700 words.
Grammar The grammar teaching content at the primary education level includes the structures that serve the development of communicative competence at Level 1, such as declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, imperative sentences, affirmative sentences, negative sentences, simple sentences, the simple present tense, the present continuous tense, the past simple tense, the future simple tense, modal verbs, singular nouns, plural nouns, personal pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, interrogative pronouns, possessive adjectives, possessive pronouns, adverbs, cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers, common prepositions, common conjunctions, articles...

Students need to form some basic learning methods such as: how to determine learning goals and plans, how to practice communication skills and learn language knowledge, how to use learning materials and electronic learning resources, how to actively and proactively participate in interactive learning activities, self-assess and adjust their activities, and personal learning plans.

Students choose appropriate learning methods compatible with their capabilities, characteristics, and learning conditions. Suitable learning methods help students study actively and effectively, becoming independent self-learners in the future.
