What are the required reading skills for 1st-grade students in Vietnam?

Under the General Education Program in Vietnamese Language issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required reading skills for 1st-grade students in Vietnam are as follows:

- Sit (or stand) with a straight back; book or notebook open broadly on the desk (or in both hands). Maintain a distance of about 25 cm between the eyes and the book or notebook.

- Correctly read sounds, rhymes, words, and sentences (might still misread some difficult and rarely used words).

- Correctly and clearly read short paragraphs or texts. Remain reading speed at about 40 - 60 words per minute. Know how to pause at commas, sentence-ending markers, or line-ending in poems.

- Begin to know silent reading.

- Recognize book covers and book titles.

What is the text corpus used in the 1st-grade Vietnamese Language curriculum?

Under the General Education Program in Vietnamese Language issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the text corpus used in the 1st-grade Vietnamese Language curriculum is as follows:

- Fairy tales, fables, short stories, comics, descriptive paragraphs

- Poem excerpts, poems (including rhymes) Text length: stories and descriptive paragraphs approx. 90 - 130 words, poems approx. 50 - 70 words

What are the assessment methods for 1st-grade students in Vietnam?

Under Article 5 Regulations on the assessment of primary school students issued along with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, teachers can assess 1st-grade students in Vietnam using the following methods:

- Assessment by observation: Teachers monitor and listen to students when teaching in classes, employ observation cards, examination boards and records of student's behaviors as proof for assessment of studying and training processes of students.

- Assessment by academic records, products and activities of students: Teachers provide feedback and assessment regarding products and activity results of students thereby assessing students based on relevant assessment criteria.

- Assessment by communication: Teachers discuss with students in form of questions and answers to collect information and promptly provide comment, remedial measures.

- Assessment by writing: Teachers employ tests consisting of questions and exercises designed according to levels and requirements to be achieved of the program in form of multiple-choice questions and writing tests to assess level of completion for academic assessment criteria.
