Schedule of public holiday for the National Day (September 2nd) in 2024 for lecturers in Vietnam

According to Notice 5015/TB-LDTBXH 2023 on Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2024 for officials, public employees, and employees as follows:

1. Officials, public employees, and employees of administrative agencies, career organizations, political organizations, political-social organizations (hereinafter referred to as officials and public employees) will have the Lunar New Year holiday in 2024 from Thursday, February 8, 2024 (29th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Cat) to the end of Wednesday, February 14, 2024 (5th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Dragon). This holiday period includes 5 Lunar New Year days and 2 compensatory days for weekly holidays as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 111 of the Labor Code.

2. Public employees and officials will have the National Day holiday in 2024 from Saturday, August 31, 2024 to the end of Tuesday, September 3, 2024. This holiday period includes 2 National Day holidays and 2 weekly holidays.

3. Agencies and units implementing the Lunar New Year and National Day holiday schedules in 2024 should ensure: reasonable arrangement of working divisions to continuously solve work, ensuring good service to organizations and the public.

4. Agencies and units not implementing fixed weekly holidays on Saturdays and Sundays, will arrange their holiday schedules based on their specific programs and plans.

5. For employees not subject to the provisions of Clause 1 of this Notice, employers will decide on the Lunar New Year and National Day holiday schedules in 2024 as follows:

- For the Lunar New Year holiday: choose 1 day at the end of the Year of the Cat and 4 days at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, or 2 days at the end of the Year of the Cat and 3 days at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, or 3 days at the end of the Year of the Cat and 2 days at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon.

- For the National Day holiday: Monday, September 2, 2024, and choose 1 out of 2 days: Sunday, September 1, 2024, or Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

- Notify the Lunar New Year and National Day 2024 holiday schedule to employees at least 30 days in advance.

- If the weekly holiday coincides with a holiday, as prescribed in Clause 1, Article 112 of the Labor Code, employees will take a compensatory weekly holiday on the next working day as prescribed in Clause 3, Article 111 of the Labor Code.

- Employers are encouraged to apply the same Lunar New Year holiday schedule for employees as for officials and public employees.

Therefore, the National Day holiday schedule on September 2 for lecturers at universities and colleges is as follows:

* For public universities:

The National Day holiday on September 2, 2024, for lecturers at public universities will be from Saturday, August 31, 2024, to the end of Tuesday, September 3, 2024. This holiday period includes 2 National Day holidays and 2 weekly holidays. In total, lecturers at public universities will have 4 days off.

* For private universities:

Private universities and colleges will choose the National Day holiday schedule on September 2, 2024, as follows: Monday, September 2, 2024, and choose 1 out of 2 days: Sunday, September 1, 2024, or Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

Therefore, lecturers at private universities and colleges will have 2 days off: Monday, September 2, 2024, and one of the two days, Sunday, September 1, 2024, or Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

If the weekly holiday coincides with the National Day holiday on September 2, 2024, lecturers will take a compensatory weekly holiday on the next working day.

Will lecturers in Vietnam be paid during the National Day holiday in 2024?

Based on Article 112 of the Labor Code 2019:

Holidays

1. employees are entitled to days off work with full pay on the following holidays:

a) New Year: 1 day (January 1);

b) Lunar New Year: 5 days;

c) Victory Day: 1 day (April 30);

d) International Labor Day: 1 day (May 1);

dd) National Day: 2 days (September 2 and one adjacent day before or after);

e) Hung Kings' Commemoration Day: 1 day (10th day of the 3rd lunar month).

2. employees who are foreigners in Vietnam, in addition to the holidays prescribed in Clause 1 of this Article, are also entitled to 1 additional traditional New Year holiday and 1 National Day holiday of their country.

3. Annually, based on actual conditions, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam shall decide on specific days off as specified in Points b and dd, Clause 1 of this Article.

Therefore, lecturers, who are also employees, when taking the National Day holiday on September 2, 2024, will be entitled to days off work with full pay on these 2 days.

How many weeks do lecturers in Vietnam work in an academic year?

Based on Clause 1, Article 3 of Circular 20/2020/TT-BGDDT:

Working time, standard teaching hours, and standard teaching hour quotas

1. The working time of lecturers in an academic year is 44 weeks (equivalent to 1,760 administrative hours) to perform tasks of teaching, scientific research, community service, and carrying out other professional tasks, determined according to the academic year after deducting the prescribed holidays.
