Example 1: The Legend of the Starfruit Tree

Once upon a time, there were two brothers whose parents passed away early. The greedy elder brother seized all the property, leaving only a starfruit tree for the younger brother. One day, a strange bird came to eat the starfruit. The younger brother lamented, and the bird said, "Eat one fruit, pay one gold nugget." The bird promised to carry the younger brother to the island for gold the next day. The younger brother took just enough and returned to live happily. Hearing the story, the greedy elder brother also asked the bird to carry him, but he took too much gold and fell into the sea. The story teaches us a lesson about greed and the virtues of kindness and honesty.

Example 2: Tam and Cam

Once upon a time, there was a gentle and hardworking girl named Tam who was mistreated by her stepmother and stepsister Cam. One day, Tam caught a goby fish, but Cam tricked her into dumping the entire basket of fish. With the help of a fairy, Tam had beautiful clothes to attend a festival and was chosen by the king to be a queen. Out of jealousy, the stepmother and Cam plotted to harm Tam. However, thanks to magic, Tam transformed into a nightingale, a xoan dao tree, a fruit, and finally returned to being a human. Eventually, Tam reunited with the king and brought her stepmother and Cam to justice. The story teaches us about kindness, compassion, and the law of cause and effect in life.

What are the methods of assessing 4th-grade students in Vietnam?

Under Clause 2, Article 5 of the Primary School Student Assessment Regulation issued with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, primary school students in Vietnam are assessed based on the following methods:

- Assessment by observation: Teachers monitor and listen to students when teaching in classes, employ observation cards, examination boards and records of student's behaviors as proof for assessment of studying and training processes of students.

- Assessment by academic records, products and activities of students: Teachers provide feedback and assessment regarding products and activity results of students thereby assessing students based on relevant assessment criteria.

- Assessment by communication: Teachers discuss with students in form of questions and answers to collect information and promptly provide comment, remedial measures.

- Assessment by writing: Teachers employ tests consisting of questions and exercises designed according to levels and requirements to be achieved of the program in form of multiple-choice questions and writing tests to assess level of completion for academic assessment criteria.

According to the General Education Program for Literature issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required language competencies for 4th-grade students after completing the Vietnamese language curriculum are regulated as follows:

- Focus more on the requirement of understanding specific content, themes, and lessons derived from the text.

- Start writing a complete short essay, mainly narrative essays, descriptive essays, and simple introductions.

- Write texts that retell stories they have read, events they have witnessed or participated in, stories imagined by students; describe familiar objects, and phenomena.

- Introduce familiar objects and activities related to students' lives. Write a paragraph expressing students' feelings and thoughts when reading a story or poem, when witnessing an event that evokes many feelings.

- Express opinions on a simple issue in studies and life; write various types of texts such as self-narratives, messages, invitations, schedules, applications, etc.; begin to know how to write following the process; the essay must have all three parts (introduction, body, conclusion).

- Present ideas and emotions clearly and comprehensibly; begin to use appropriate gestures and body language when speaking; retell stories they have read or heard clearly; know how to share, exchange their feelings, attitudes, and thoughts on the discussed issues; know how to explain an object or simple process.

- Listen and understand with an appropriate attitude, grasp the essential content; recognize the speaker's emotions; know how to respond to what they have heard.
