Vietnamese language is called "Literature" in lower and upper secondary education in Vietnam.
According to Section 3, Appendix of the General Education Program for Vietnamese language, issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, there are 3 common objectives of 4th-grade Vietnamese language as follows:
{1} To help students continue to develop good qualities formed during primary education; to enhance and expand the development requirements regarding qualities with specific expressions such as:
+ To be proud of the nation's history and literature;
+ To have dreams and aspirations, a spirit of self-learning and self-respect,
+ To have a sense of citizenship, and respect for the law.
{2} To continue developing general and language competencies, and literary competencies formed in primary education with higher requirements; to develop language ability with requirements such as:
+ To distinguish between literary texts, argumentative texts, and informational texts;
+ To comprehend both explicit and implicit content of various texts;
+ To write paragraphs and essays narratively, descriptively, expressively, argumentatively, explanatorily, practically complete, coherent, logically correct, and integrating expression modes;
+ To speak clearly and coherently; to have a confident attitude, appropriate to the communication context; to listen understandingly with an appropriate attitude.
{3} To develop literary competencies with requirements:
+ To distinguish various literary genres such as stories, poems, memoirs, scripts, and specific sub-genres;
+ To recognize the characteristics of literary language, to identify and analyze the effects of formal elements and artistic measures associated with each literary genre;
+ To recognize the expressive, cognitive, and aesthetic values; to analyze the imagery, content, and form of literary works;
+ To be able to create some products with literary characteristics.
