The general education school for athletically gifted students (Vietnam National Parent University, Ho Chi Minh City) has announced the structure and sample question papers for the 10th-grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 academic year. This is the first time the school has provided sample question papers for the 10th-grade entrance exam, including both gifted and non-gifted subjects, to help students familiarize themselves with the exam format and make appropriate study plans.

On February 21, a school representative stated that this year marks the first cohort of students following the 2018 general education program applying for 10th grade. Therefore, this aims to help students get acquainted with the exam format, enabling them to study appropriately.

To help students best prepare for the 10th-grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 academic year according to the 2018 General Education Program, the general education school for athletically gifted students (Vietnam National Parent University, Ho Chi Minh City) provides information about the structure and sample question papers for the 10th-grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 academic year as follows:

(2) Structure of question papers for the 10th-grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 academic year of the general education school for athletically gifted students

What are the regulations for organizing the 10th-grade entrance exam in Vietnam?

According to Article 13 of the Regulations on enrollment for lower and upper secondary educatio issued together with Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT, the regulations for organizing the 10th-grade entrance exam in Vietnam are:

(1) Exam subjects/papers

- The subjects and papers include: Mathematics, Literature, and one additional subject or paper selected by the Department of Education and Training from one of the two options:

+ The third subject is chosen from subjects evaluated by scores in the lower secondary education program, ensuring no repetition of the same third subject for more than three consecutive years.

+ The third paper is a composite paper from multiple subjects chosen from subjects evaluated by scores in the lower secondary education program.

For upper secondary schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, parent universities, universities, and research institutes organizing their own entrance exams, the third subject or paper is selected directly by the managing body.

- The third subject or paper is announced after the end of the first semester but no later than March 31 annually.

- Time allocated for taking the exam subject or paper: Literature: 120 minutes; Mathematics: 90 minutes or 120 minutes; third subject: 60 minutes or 90 minutes; third paper: 90 minutes or 120 minutes.

- Exam content lies within the lower secondary education program, mainly Grade 9.

- For enrollment into upper-secondary schools for the gifted, students must take the required subjects and papers specified in this clause and one gifted subject. Each gifted subject has a separate examination based on the lower secondary school program, ensuring the admission of students with aptitude in that subject.

(2) Question paper setting

- Question paper setting must ensure safety and confidentiality in all stages: drafting, copying, transporting, delivery, and storage of question papers. The question paper must be accurate, scientific, and pedagogically sound; include official and reserve papers; each question paper with an answer key and marking guide.

- The question paper setting board is decided by the Director of the Department of Education and Training, comprising:

+ The Chairperson of the board is a leader of the Department of Education and Training;

+ The Vice-Chairperson of the board is a leader of the Department of Education and Training or heads of departments under the Department of Education and Training;

+ Secretary, question paper setting staff, exam researchers; security personnel; service staff, medical, security personnel.

Secretaries, question paper setting staff, and exam researchers are specialists, managers, lecturers, and teachers with relevant expertise, well-versed in the lower secondary education curriculum.

Each exam subject has at least one (1) person to either draft or research the question paper, who is a secondary school teacher.

For upper secondary schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, parent universities, universities, and research institutes conducting their exams, the question paper setting boards established by the Minister of Education and Training, or Parent University Director, University Rector, and Research Institute Director.

- Responsibilities and powers of the question paper setting board:

+ Develop a work plan;

+ Assign responsibilities to board members;

+ Organize question paper setting; organize question paper review;

+ Approve official, reserve papers, and marking guides for official and reserve question papers;

+ Handle or recommend handling of unusual incidents during question paper setting; compile and store board records; ensure security, safety, and confidentiality of question papers as stipulated;

+ Consider, decide, or recommend reward or discipline forms for board members according to regulation.

(3) Invigilation

- Invigilation must ensure fairness, safety, and seriousness. Procedures and responsibility assignments for Invigilators must be comprehensive and clear, ensuring independence and objectivity between stages; effective measures against cheating in exams.

Arrange the structure of invigilators and supervision invigilators appropriate to the number of exam rooms. The number of candidates in each exam room should not exceed 24 (twenty-four) candidates, each room with two (2) invigilators.

- The invigilation board is convened by the Director of the Department of Education and Training, including: the Chairperson of the board is the principal or vice-principal of an upper or lower secondary school; the Vice-Chairperson of the board is the principal, vice-principal, or subject team leader at an upper or lower secondary school; the secretary and invigilators and supervision invigilators are lecturers, teachers, specialists; law enforcement personnel; service staff, medical, security personnel.

For upper secondary schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, parent universities, universities, and research institutes hosting their exams, the invigilation board is established by the Minister of Education and Training, or Parent University Director, University Rector, and Research Institute Director.

- Responsibilities and powers of the invigilation board: develop the board's work plan; assign responsibilities to board members; organize study sessions for board members and candidates to comprehends, implement exam regulations and related documents; organize invigilation; handle or recommend handling of unusual incidents during invigilation; compile and store board records; ensure security, safety, and confidentiality of question papers as stipulated; consider, decide or recommend forms of rewards and discipline for candidates and board members as stipulated.

(4) Marking

- Marking must ensure the safety and confidentiality of question papers in all stages: receiving, storing, masking, organizing marking. marking must be accurate, and objective according to the answer key and marking guide.

In marking written papers, there should be collective marking of at least 10 (ten) question papers; organizing separate marking independently. In marking multiple-choice exams, if using marking software, training must be organized for Makers on software usage. The marking software must be accurate, scientific; and verified before use.

- The marking board is convened by the Director of the Department of Education and Training, consisting of: the Chairperson of the board is a leader of the Department of Education and Training; the Vice-Chairperson of the board is a leader of the Department of Education and Training or heads of departments under the Department of Education and Training; secretary, Makers; law enforcement personnel; service staff, medical, security personnel. The secretary and Makers are lecturers, teachers, and specialists; essay-exam Makers are familiar with the lower secondary education curriculum; multiple-choice exam Makers are proficient in using marking software.

For upper secondary schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, parent universities, universities, and research institutes hosting their exams, the marking board is established by the Minister of Education and Training, or Parent University Director, University Rector, and Research Institute Director.

- Responsibilities and powers of the marking board: develop the board's work plan; assign responsibilities to board members; organize masking; organize marking; unmasking, calculating exam scores; handle or recommend handling of unusual incidents during marking; compile and store board records; ensure security, safety, and confidentiality of question papers as stipulated; consider or recommend forms of rewards and discipline for board members according to regulation.

(5) Remarking of papers

- The remarking of papers must ensure the safety, confidentiality of question papers in all stages: withdrawing, handing over, storing, and remarking of papers; the remarking process follows the marking procedure.

- Composition, responsibilities, and powers of the Remarking board follow the composition, responsibilities, and powers of the marking board as stipulated in clause 4 of this Article. Makers of the marking board do not overlap with those of the marking board.

(6) Admission scores to 10th grade

Admission scores to 10th grade are the total scores of the exam subjects, calculated on a 10 (ten) point scale for each subject. Announcement of benchmark scores is done simultaneously with the publication of exam scores.

Note: The Department of Education and Training, based on the provisions of this Regulation, provides specific regulations for question paper setting, examination, marking, and remarking of question papers to suit practical conditions.

Upper secondary schools under the Ministry of Education and Training, parent universities, universities, and research institutes with their exams follow the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training or directly managed parent universities, universities, and research institutes or follow the regulations of the Department of Education and Training where the school is located.

Who is entitled to priority points in admission to 10th grade in Vietnam?

Under Clause 2, Article 14 of the Regulations on enrollment for lower and upper secondary education issued with Circular 30/2024/TT-BGDDT, the persons entitled to priority points in the admission to 10th grade in Vietnam are as follows:

(1) Group 1:

- Children of martyrs;

- Children of war invalids with a labor capacity reduction of 81% or more;

- Children of persons with disabilities with a labor capacity reduction of 81% or more;

- Children of individuals awarded with the "Certificate of Policy Beneficiary as War Invalids" with a labor capacity reduction of 81% or more;

- Children of those who participated in the resistance activities affected by toxic chemicals;

- Children of revolutionary activists before January 1, 1945;

- Children of revolutionary activists from January 1, 1945, to the August Revolution in 1945.

(2) Group 2:

- Children of Heroes of the Armed Forces, children of Labor Heroes, children of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers;

- Children of war invalids with a labor capacity reduction of less than 81%;

- Children of persons with disabilities with a labor capacity reduction of less than 81%;

- Children of individuals awarded with the "Certificate of Policy Beneficiary as War Invalids" with a labor capacity reduction of less than 81%.

(3) Group 3:

- Individuals with either parent from an ethnic minority group;

- Ethnic minorities;

- Students from particularly disadvantaged areas.

Note: Priority points are added to the admission score based on a 10-point scale. Group 1: add 2.0 points; Group 2: add 1.5 points; Group 3: add 1.0 point.
