Under the General Education Program for the Literature subject issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the literary competencies required for 4th-grade students in Vietnam include:
- General literary competencies required:
+ Distinguish between prose and verse (passages, prose pieces and poetry, verse pieces);
+ Recognize the content of the text and the writer's attitude and feelings;
+ Begin to understand the effects of certain formal elements of a literary text (language, characters, plot, verse, comparison, personification). Know how to relate, imagine, and express with literary style in writing and speaking.
- Requirements for 4th-grade students:
+ Know how to read literary texts expressively; retell, and summarize the main content of the story or poem; evaluate the characters, events, and the writer's attitude and feelings in the text;
+ Recognize the time and place, some types of verse forms, verse rhythms, beautiful and unique vocabularies, and the effects of rhetorical devices like personification and comparison.
+ Understand the meaning or lesson learned from the text.
+ Be able to write stories or descriptive passages that express emotions and the ability to relate, and imagine.
