- To develop essential qualities in students: patriotism, compassion, diligence, honesty, and responsibility; to nurture the soul, form character, and develop individuality.

To assist students in exploring themselves and the world around them, understanding humanity, having a rich inner life, and developing a humanistic outlook and behavior; cultivating a love for Vietnamese language and literature; maintaining an awareness of national roots and cultural identity, contributing to the preservation and development of Vietnamese cultural values; foster a spirit of appreciation for the cultural quintessence of humanity and the ability to integrate internationally.

- To contribute to helping students develop general competencies: autonomy and self-learning, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity.

Literature (Vietnamese language) helps students develop linguistic competence and literary competence: refining skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening; possessing foundational general knowledge about Vietnamese language and literature, developing both imaginative and logical thinking, contributing to forming a fundamental education for a cultured person; the ability to compose common texts; the ability to receive and evaluate literary works specifically, communication products, and aesthetic values in general in life.

Thus, according to the above regulations, one of the objectives of teaching the 5th-grade Vietnamese language subject is to assist students in exploring themselves and the world around them.

How many lessons do periodic assessments in the Vietnamese language subject for 5th-grade students account for?

Under Section 8 of the General Education Program for Literature promulgated with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the duration for the Literature curriculum across educational levels is as follows:

[1] Duration for each grade (based on the number of lessons)

Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12
420 350 245 245 245 140 140 140 140 105 105 105

At the upper secondary level, each grade includes an additional 35 lessons for elective study topics.

[2] Duration allocated for educational content

The duration for educational content is flexibly arranged by textbook authors and teachers based on achievement requirements for each class and actual teaching conditions. However, it should ensure a reasonable proportion between the following components:

- Between knowledge provision and skill training (focusing on practicing skills in practical application).

- Among different types of texts for reading, writing, speaking, and listening (allocating more time to reading literary texts).

- Among the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening (allocating more time to reading skills); specifically, the time ratio allocated for skills in each grade is as follows:

Grade Group Reading Writing Speaking and Listening Periodic Assessment
From grades 1 to 3 approximately 60% approximately 25% approximately 10% approximately 5%
From grades 4 to 5 approximately 63% approximately 22% approximately 10% approximately 5%
From grades 6 to 9 approximately 63% approximately 22% approximately 10% approximately 5%
From grades 10 to 12 approximately 60% approximately 25% approximately 10% approximately 5%

Thus, periodic assessments in the Vietnamese language subject for 5th-grade students account for approximately 5%.
