Shall the Lunar New Year holiday 2025 in Vietnam last 9 days off?
The Office of the Government of Vietnam has issued document No. 8726/VPCP-KGVX dated November 26, 2024, conveying the directives of the Prime Minister of Vietnam regarding the plans for the Lunar New Year holiday, National Day holiday, and several other public holidays in 2025.

Considering the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in Official Dispatch 5152/BLDTBXH-CATLD in 2024 and Official Dispatch 5621/BLDTBXH-CATLD in 2024 regarding the plan for the Lunar New Year holiday, National Day holiday, and some other holidays in 2025, the Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh has the following opinions:
(1) Agree with the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs in the aforementioned documents about the Lunar New Year holiday, National Day holiday, and the swapping of workdays on the holidays of Victory Day and International Labor Day (April 30 and May 1, 2025). The Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs is to inform administrative agencies, organizations, political organizations, socio-political organizations, and enterprises, and employees as per regulations.
(2) Agencies and units are to arrange and organize departments on duty as per regulations and work appropriately to handle continuous work, ensuring good services to organizations and the public, paying attention to assigning officials to handle sudden, unexpected tasks that may arise during the Tet and holiday period as per regulations.
(3) Ministries, central authorities and Provincial People's Committees should have specific and suitable plans and measures to encourage units, enterprises, organizations, and individuals to actively engage in implementing economic, production, and business activities; ensure the stability of supply and demand for goods, services, and prices in the market; contribute to promoting production, business, economic growth; practice thrift, waste prevention, aiming to successfully achieve the goals and tasks of the 2025 plan, the year of acceleration and breakthrough in implementing the five-year plan (2021-2025), creating a solid foundation for rapid and sustainable development in the coming time.
Previously, according to the plan submitted by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to the Prime Minister of Vietnam, the Lunar New Year holiday 2025 lasts 9 consecutive days off, including 5 days of Tet holiday and 4 weekly breaks.
Vietnamese officials, public employees, and employees will have a 5-day Lunar New Year holiday, from Monday, January 27, 2025, to Friday, January 31, 2025 (from the 28th of the last lunar month of 2024 to the 3rd of the first lunar month of 2025).
However, since, in 2025, the 5-day Lunar New Year holiday falls on working days, employees are entitled to an additional 2 weekly breaks before and 2 days off after the Tet holiday.
Therefore, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs submitted a plan for officials and public employees, employees in administrative agencies, organizations, political organizations, and socio-political organizations to have a holiday from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (from the 26th of the last lunar month to the end of the 5th of the first lunar month).
This plan allows employees more time with family, stimulates tourism, and encourages shopping activities.
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also encourages enterprises to allow employees to take holidays according to the mentioned schedule. For enterprises not subject to the above, the Ministry requests employers to decide on one of the 3 options for the Tet holidays.
Option 1: take 1 day off at the end of 2024 and 4 days at the beginning of 2025.
Option 2: take 2 days off at the end of 2024 and 3 days at the beginning of 2025.
Option 3, take 3 days off at the end of 2024 and 2 days at the beginning of 2025.
Employers must notify employees of the Tet holiday plan 30 days in advance.

What is the framework for the 2024 - 2025 academic year plan in Vietnam?
Article 1 Decision 2045/QD-BGDDT in 2024, the framework for the 2024 - 2025 academic year plan in Vietnam for preschool, general education, and continuing education nationwide as follows:
- Start classes at the earliest 1 week before the school opening day. Particularly for grade 1, start classes at the earliest 2 weeks before the school opening day.
- Organize the school opening on September 5, 2024.
- Conclude the first semester before January 18, 2025, and complete the program to conclude the school year before May 31, 2025.
- Recognize the completion of primary education and lower secondary graduation before June 30, 2025.
- Complete enrollment for beginning grades before July 31, 2025.
- The high school graduation exam in 2025 is expected to take place on June 26 and 27, 2025.
- Other national examinations are organized according to the regulations and guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training.
What are the duties and rights of students in Vietnam?
Under Article 34, Article 35 of Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT regarding the duties and rights of students in Vietnam:
Duties of students
- Learn and train according to curricula and education plans of their schools.
- Respect their parents, officials, teachers and staff of their schools, and those older than them; maintain solidarity and mutual support in learning and training; conform to the charter and rules of their schools; and abide by the law.
- Take exercises and maintain personal hygiene.
- Participate in group activities of their schools and classes, Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneer Organization and Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union; help their families, join physical and social activities and environmental protection activities, and maintain traffic order and safety.
- Protect school and public property; contribute to fostering, preservation and enhancement of school traditions.
Rights of students
- Receive comprehensive education with fairness, be provided with time, facilities, hygiene and safety to learn in class and self-learn at home, be informed of their education and training, and be able to use learning, cultural and sport equipment of their schools as per the law.
- Receive respect, protection and fair and democratic treatment, complain to their schools and education authorities about decisions concerning themselves; transfer school with legitimate reason as per existing regulations; enter school before the compulsory starting age, skip a grade and study at an age higher than the compulsory attendance age according to regulations in Article 33 of Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT.
- Participate in activities for development of their gifts in academic subjects, sports and art organized by their schools if able to.
- Students eligible for social benefits, disadvantaged students and gifted students may receive sponsorship or other benefits as per the law.
- Transfer school if eligible according to regulations following school transfer procedures stipulated by the Minister of Education and Training.
- Enjoy other rights as per the law.
