In Vietnam, what is the grade at which Newton's First Law is taught in Physics? What is Newton's First Law? What is the formula for Newton's First Law?

What is Newton's First Law? What is the formula for Newton's First Law?

Newton's First Law describes the natural state of motion of an object when no external force is acting upon it. It introduces the concept of inertia and serves as an important foundation for Newton's other laws and classical mechanics.

What is Newton's First Law? What is the formula for Newton's First Law?

Newton's First Law, also known as the law of inertia, is one of the three fundamental laws of classical mechanics, articulated by Isaac Newton. This law describes the state of motion of an object when no external force is acting upon it.

*Content of Newton's First Law:

An object will remain at rest or move in uniform straight motion if no force acts on it, or when the sum of all forces acting on it is zero.

Detailed Interpretation:

Object at rest: If an object is at rest and no force acts on it, it will remain at rest indefinitely.

Object in motion: If an object is moving with a uniform straight motion and no force acts on it, it will continue to move with constant velocity.

Net force is zero: If multiple forces act on an object but their net force is zero (forces are balanced), the object will maintain its state of motion (either at rest or in uniform straight motion).

*Formula for Newton's First Law:

Newton's First Law does not have a specific mathematical formula like the Second Law (F = ma). Instead, it is represented by logical statements about the state of motion:

If F = 0 (the net force acting on an object is zero), then v = const (the velocity of the object is constant).

Where:

F: is the net force acting on the object (the vector sum of all forces).

v: is the velocity of the object.

const: is a constant.

*Significance of Newton's First Law:

Inertia: This law introduces the concept of inertia, which is the tendency of an object to maintain its state of motion. An object tends to resist changes in its velocity. An object's mass is a measure of its inertia; the greater the mass, the greater the inertia, and the harder it is to change its state of motion.

Foundation for other laws: The First Law is the foundation for Newton's other laws. It helps us understand that force is the cause of changes in velocity (acceleration) of an object, not the cause of maintaining velocity.

*Illustrative Examples:

A book resting on a table will remain at rest unless someone moves it.

A car moving at a constant speed on a highway (ignoring friction and air resistance) will continue to do so if no force acts on it (such as braking or acceleration).

When a car stops abruptly, a passenger inside tends to lurch forward due to inertia.

In Vietnam, what is the grade at which Newton's First Law is taught in Physics?

Under Section 5 of the Appendix to the General Education Program for Physics issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, learning outcomes required after completing the 10th-grade Physics curriculum in Vietnam are as follows:

*Three Newtonian Laws of Motion

- Conduct experiments, or use provided data to derive a ~ F, a ~ 1/m, and from there derive the expression a = F/m or F = ma (Newton's Second Law).

- Based on available results (from experiments or provided data), or reason using a = F/m, it can be concluded that mass is a quantity characteristic of an object's inertia.

- State Newton's First Law and illustrate it with specific examples.

- Apply the relationship between derived units and the 7 base units of the SI system.

- State that the gravitational force acting on an object is the gravitational attraction between the Earth and the object; the center of gravity of an object is the point where gravitational force acts on it; the weight of an object is its mass multiplied by the free-fall acceleration.

- Describe using real-world examples about equal and unequal forces.

- Qualitatively describe free-fall motion in a uniform gravitational field with air resistance.

- Execute projects or research topics applying the increase or decrease of air resistance according to the shape of the object.

- State Newton's Third Law, illustrate it with specific examples, and apply Newton's Third Law in some simple cases.

Thus, Newton's First Law is taught in the 10th-grade Physics curriculum.
