SIX SUSPECTS

(Pham Cao Cung)

Summary of the beginning: All six people attending a dinner at Mr. Pham Vien's house—director of an import-export firm when he was murdered—are waiting to meet Inspector Truc Tam as he has found clues related to the Pham Vien case. The inspector summarizes the relationship of the six people with the host Pham Vien: Huyen Ly was an old school friend of Pham Vien, whereas Mr. Duong Ba was a long-standing trade partner of nearly ten years. Mr. Phan Vy was Pham Vien's nephew and would often stay at his uncle's house when in town. Mr. Sen, despite being the head of the office and possibly Pham Vien's personal secretary, is also suspected. Mr. and Mrs. Ba were known to represent the firm in Hong Kong. Taking advantage of their visit to their hometown, Mr. Pham Vien invited them for dinner. Everyone tries to prove they are not the culprit. Inspector Truc Tam recounts what happened that night: "After everyone finished dining, Mr. Pham Vien excused himself to his room as he was feeling a bit tired, telling everyone to relax and that he might return. At 11:15, Mr. Phan Vy said, 'Does anyone want some Biscuit? Let me pour a few drinks from the remaining bottle, it's only enough for two glasses.' Phan Vy went downstairs to fetch another bottle... and just as he was about to enter, a gunshot was heard from the third floor, which is where Mr. Pham Vien's private room was... everyone rushed upstairs and found Mr. Pham Vien's door ajar, his cabinet ransacked, and he lay on a rocking chair, a 6.35mm bullet through his lung, lifeless... The investigation revealed: the murderer who killed Mr. Pham Vien also took about 7,000 to 8,000 dong from his drawer..."

Glancing at everyone, Truc Tam leisurely continued:

- In regular investigations, our first need is to find out who benefits after Pham Vien's death. But with all six of you, I find that everyone could have a reasonable motive to kill Pham Vien either for gain or private revenge they have kept secret...

Seeing some attendees eager to speak, Truc Tam raised his hand to preempt, continuing directly:

My statements are backed by solid evidence, so don’t need to deny anything... What’s particular is: when the gunshot rang, ending Pham Vien's life, all six of you were in the living room, so logically, no one could have been involved in this murder...

Hearing this from Truc Tam, everyone felt relieved and breathed a sigh of relief... Pausing for a moment, Truc Tam looked at everyone and asked:

- Did any of you watch a movie or a play a few days ago? Mr. Ba Cu replied:

- My wife and I watched Hoang Thanh Troupe's 'Hyun Chau Nu' a few days ago...

Speaking, Mr. Ba Cu felt around in his pocket, seemingly to find two ticket stubs, but then shook his head:

- Strange, I remember seeing the two ticket stubs when I reached for cigarettes, but now I can’t seem to find them...

Truc Tam smiled and said:

- That doesn’t matter... Now, I only ask that you listen to me... Though he declared so, Truc Tam only rolled up his sleeve to check the time, then sat silently as if waiting for something. About five minutes later, the detective inspector loudly asked:

Is Anh Nam here?

Truc Tam ordered: “Start, Anh Nam!”

Then within two minutes, a loud bang came from the third floor... Truc Tam asked everyone:

Did you hear anything?

Everyone replied: Yes, a gunshot, just like the night the crime occurred.

Truc Tam smiled as Phan Vy stood up suddenly, Truc Tam also approached, handcuffed him immediately. And Truc Tam explained:

Phan Vy killed Mr. Pham Vien to seize the inheritance, as Mr. Pham Vien had no children. This treacherous nephew probably planned this for a long time... He must have rehearsed the sequence and found everything perfectly timed... The nearly empty bottle was just an excuse for him to leave; the full bottle was hidden in a bin filled with paper, in the adjacent office room.

Upon hearing this, Mr. Ba Cu spoke:

- Ah, now I remember, the ticket stubs from that afternoon, I threw them in the paper bin when I was discussing business with Mr. Pham Vien...

Truc Tam smiled and continued:

- It's precisely thanks to the theater ticket stub stuck under the bottle that I clearly understood the case... When he said he was fetching liquor, Phan Vy had quickly gone to the upper floor, shot Pham Vien, then he placed a firecracker in a large incense burner on the display cabinet, lit the fuse. Swiftly, Phan Vy returned downstairs, retrieved the full bottle, opened the door to the living room... Because the door was closed the first time, no one heard the gunshot; the second time, the sound of the firecracker burst as the culprit cunningly opened the door wide upon return... Phan Vy's entire plan aimed to make everyone think Mr. Pham Vien was shot while he was supposedly present!
