What are the general orientations for the Music curriculum in Vietnam?

According to subsection 1 Item 5 of the General Education Program in Music issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the general orientations for the Music curriculum in Vietnam are as follows:

- The Music curriculum applies modern educational methods, promotes the positivity, proactivity, and creativity of students in learning and developing their musical potential.

- Teachers actively create a friendly learning environment to provide students with opportunities to communicate, collaborate, experience, explore knowledge, and develop musical potential; flexibly combine verbal teaching methods with group activity organization methods; enhance students' experience and exploration of musical art through classroom learning, music performances, cultural heritage visits, and interaction with artists and musicians; allocate appropriate time for talented students to perform as core individuals and develop their musical abilities.

- The development of the musical ability involves regular and long-term practice, exercise, and performance skills. Therefore, in each lesson, teachers should flexibly set goals with specific requirements suitable for the teaching content and duration to focus on guiding students in practice and exercises.

What are the perspectives on developing the Music curriculum in Vietnam?

According to the General Education Program for Music issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the perspectives on developing the Music curriculum in Vietnam are as follows:

- Comply with the basic regulations stated in the overall General Education Program, including general orientations for all subjects (perspective, objectives, requirements, educational plan, and orientations on educational content, teaching methods, and assessment of educational outcomes, conditions for implementation, and program development); orientation for developing the Music curriculum at three educational levels.

- Focus on developing specific aesthetic capacity for the Music subject (musical ability) through educational content with basic and practical knowledge; develop harmony of virtue, intellect, physique, and beauty; emphasize practice.

- Inherit and promote the strengths of the General Education Program 2006 for Music while absorbing the experience of curriculum development from some advanced educational systems around the world. The program content is designed in a way that combines concentricity and linearity, clearly showing the characteristics of musical art and national cultural identity; high integration in lower grades, gradual differentiation in higher grades.

- Create diverse learning contexts, with rich content and learning activities, to meet the needs and interests of students; create emotions, joy, and enthusiasm in learning; contribute to career orientation for students with musical talents.

- Ensure core educational content is uniformly implemented nationwide while maintaining openness to accommodate the diversity of conditions and learning abilities of students from different regions.

Is Music a compulsory subject in Vietnam?

Under the General Education Program for Music issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the regulations are as follows:

- Basic education stage (from grades 1 to 9): Music is a compulsory subject. The content includes knowledge and skills in singing, playing musical instruments, listening to music, music reading, music theory, and music appreciation. In this stage, music education helps students experience, explore, and express themselves through musical activities, aiming to develop aesthetic competency, recognize the diversity of the musical world, and the relationship between music, culture, history, and other art forms; simultaneously raising awareness to protect and promote traditional music values. The teaching duration for each grade is 35 lessons per academic year.

- Career-oriented education stage (from grades 10 to 12): Music is an elective subject based on interests and career orientation. The core content includes expanded and advanced knowledge and skills in singing and chorale, playing four musical instruments, listening to music, music reading, music theory, and music appreciation. The program's objective is to help students perfect practical skills, expand their understanding of music in relation to cultural, historical, and social factors; raise awareness, appreciate, protect, and promote traditional music values; apply knowledge to life, meet personal preferences, and approach careers related to music. The teaching duration for each grade is 70 lessons per academic year. Additionally, students can choose study topics with a duration of 35 lessons per academic year.

Music is a compulsory subject from grades 1 to 9. From grades 10 to 12, it is an elective subject.
