What are the duties and rights of students in Vietnam when participating in sports competitions?

Under Article 7 of Circular 48/2020/TT-BGDDT regulating the duties and rights of students when participating in sports competitions:

(1) Duties of students

- Participate in training and sports competitions as per the plans of the school and educational authorities at all levels; join sports clubs according to their interests and age characteristics.

Students participating in sports activities proposed by other organizations must have permission from the school.

- Annually, complete the testing, assessment, and classification of physical fitness according to current regulations.

- Perform other duties of students in accordance with current regulations.

(2) Rights of students

- Students are allowed to participate in sports activities within the school; they may be selected and sent to compete in local, national, and international sports events.

- Students with a talent for sports are selected for training at school for gifted athletess as per regulations.

- Students winning gold, silver, or bronze medals in national sports competitions organized by the educational management authority and those who are members of the Vietnamese national team participating in regional, continental, and world sports events are granted preferential policies and encouragements when participating in entrance exams for upper secondary education, high school graduation exams, and enrollment for undergraduate and college programs as per current regulations.

- Students winning gold, silver, or bronze medals in national sports competitions organized by the educational management authority and those who are members of the Vietnamese national team are exempted from the Physical Education subject for that academic year.

- Receive help from schools, teachers, and lecturers to complete the Physical Education curriculum and physical fitness standards. Students with congenital health conditions can participate in training with appropriate content and forms.

- Students sent by schools, and educational authorities to participate in sports competitions that require extended absences must organize supplementary teaching, ensuring they meet the conditions to take exams, and complete credits as prescribed.

- Students who are athletes focusing on training with the national team or at athlete training centers at provincial, city, sectoral, and national levels are facilitated by educational authorities to continue regular studies, ensuring completion of general education programs and qualifications suited to their age with appropriate forms.

- Exercise other rights of students as per current regulations.

What are the responsibilities of schools in Vietnam regarding participation in sports competitions?

According to Article 11 of Circular 48/2020/TT-BGDDT regulating the responsibilities of schools in Vietnam regarding participation in sports competitions:

- Seriously implement this Circular and the instructions and directives from superior educational authorities.

- Conduct the assessment and classification of students' physical fitness according to regulations.

- Arrange physical education teachers and lecturers to participate in guiding, organizing, and managing sports clubs, and competitive sports activities.

- Develop plans and provide opportunities for physical education teachers and lecturers to be trained and improve their professional skills; participate in scientific research; guide and organize training and competitive sports activities; train teams to compete in various levels of sports events.

- Develop plans to organize sports activities for students in schools and send teams to participate in sports competitions organized by educational authorities at all levels, the Vietnam Student Sports Association, and the Vietnam School and Professional Sports Association.

- Annually, plan the construction, repair, maintenance, and use of facilities; purchase new and supplement sports equipment and tools to serve the physical education subject and sports activities.
