Is Grade 5 Mathematics a mandatory subject in Vietnam ?
Based on Section 1 of the general education program for mathematics issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT:
- Mathematics increasingly has many applications in life; basic mathematical knowledge and skills have helped people solve real-life problems systematically and accurately, contributing to social development.
- Mathematics in schools helps to form and develop core qualities, general abilities, and mathematical abilities for students; develop key knowledge and skills and provide opportunities for students to experience and apply mathematics in reality; create connections between mathematical ideas, mathematics with reality, mathematics with other subjects and educational activities, especially with subjects like Science, Natural Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Informatics to implement STEM education.
- The content of Mathematics is often logical, abstract, and general. Therefore, to understand and learn Mathematics, the school mathematics program needs to ensure a balance between "learning" knowledge and "applying" knowledge to solve specific problems.
- During the process of learning and applying mathematics, students always have the opportunity to use technology, modern teaching equipment, especially electronic computers and handheld calculators to support the process of representing, exploring, and solving mathematical problems.
- In the general education program, Mathematics is a compulsory subject from grade 1 to grade 12.
The mathematics education content is divided into two phases:
+ Basic education phase:
Mathematics helps students systematically understand the most necessary mathematical concepts, principles, and rules for everyone, providing a foundation for studying at higher levels or for use in daily life.
+ Career-oriented education phase:
++ Mathematics helps students have a relatively comprehensive view of mathematics, understand the role and applications of mathematics in practice, and the professions related to mathematics, helping students orient their careers and have the ability to self-study related mathematics issues throughout their lives.
++ Besides core educational content, each school year, students (especially those oriented towards natural sciences and technology) can choose to study some learning topics.
++ These topics aim to enhance knowledge about mathematics, skills to apply mathematics into practice, meet students' interests, needs, and career orientation.
+ The mathematics program in both educational phases has a linear structure combined with a "spiral concentric" (centralized, expanding, and gradually advanced) structure, revolving around and integrating three main knowledge streams:
++ Numbers, Algebra, and some elements of Analysis; Geometry and Measurement; Statistics and Probability.
Thus, mathematics is a compulsory subject from grade 1 to grade 12, making it an essential subject in the general education program.
What are perspectives of teaching grade 5 Mathematics program in Vietnam?
Based on Section 2 of the general education program for mathematics issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the perspectives of teaching grade 5 Mathematics program in Vietnam are as follows:
- Ensure simplicity, practicality, modernity
The Mathematics program ensures simplicity, practicality, modernity by reflecting the essential contents to be covered in schools, meeting the need to understand the world as well as the interests and preferences of learners, suitable with the approach of today's world. The program embodies the spirit of “mathematics for everyone”, anyone can learn mathematics but each person can learn mathematics in a way that suits their interests and personal abilities.
The Mathematics program emphasizes applicability, connection with reality, and other subjects or educational activities, especially with subjects aiming to implement STEM education, connected with the modern development trends of the economy, science, social life, and urgent global issues (such as climate change, sustainable development, financial education,...).
This is also shown through practical and experiential activities in mathematical education in various forms such as: conducting projects and studies on Mathematics, especially projects and studies on the application of mathematics in practice.
Organizing math learning games, math clubs, forums, conferences, math competitions,... creates opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, skills, and experiences creatively into practice.
