Age of Primary School Students

  1. The age of students entering first grade is 6 years old and is calculated by year. Disabled children, those with physical or mental development delays, children in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority children, orphans without support, children returning from abroad, and children of foreigners studying or working in Vietnam may enter first grade at an older age than the prescribed age but not more than 3 years older. Cases where children enroll in first grade exceeding the prescribed age by more than 3 years will be decided by the Director of the Department of Education and Training.

Primary School students can study at an older age than the prescribed age in cases of repetition, students in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority students, disabled students, students with physical or mental development delays, orphans without support, children returning from abroad and other cases as prescribed by law.

Thus, typically, the age of grade 1 students is 6 years old, calculated by year, and students advance to each grade annually. Therefore, grade 5 students will be 10 years old.

(1) Vietnamese Language Knowledge

- Rules for writing the names of people and foreign places

- Some cases of capitalizing common nouns to show special respect

- Vocabulary by topic

- Dictionary: how to find words, meanings of words, correct usage of words, and other information search

- Meanings of some simple, common proverbs

- Meanings of some common Sino-Vietnamese elements, “homophones with different meanings”

- Synonyms: characteristics and effects

- Polysemantic words and the meanings of polysemantic words in texts.

- Pronouns and conjunctions: characteristics and functions

- Simple and compound sentences: characteristics and functions

- Use of hyphens (placed in the middle of a sentence to mark explanatory parts); connectors (linking words in borrowed multi-word expressions)

- Rhetoric of repetition in words and phrases: characteristics and effects

- Linking sentences in a paragraph, some sentence linking methods, and linking words: characteristics and effects

- Types of text and genres

+ A composition rewriting the ending based on a story

+ A descriptive composition about people, scenery

+ A paragraph conveying feelings and emotions about an event or a poem or story

+ A paragraph giving an opinion about a social phenomenon

+ A composition explaining a natural phenomenon, introducing a book or film, work report, activity program, using charts; advertisement texts (flyers, posters, etc.)

- Information through images, data (non-verbal communication methods).

(2) Literature Knowledge for grade 5 students includes the following contents:

- Theme

- Ending of a story

- True stories and imaginary stories

- Details, time, place in the story; images in poetry

- Characters in dramatic texts and dialogue

Additionally, the texts used for grade 5 students in the General Education Program for the Vietnamese Language subject issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT include:

* Literary Texts

- Folk tales, short stories, science fiction stories; descriptive paragraphs (texts)

- Poems, poetic passages, nursery rhymes, proverbs

- Literary scripts

Length of text: stories and scripts approximately 300 - 350 words, descriptive texts about 200 - 250 words, poetry about 110 - 130 words

* Informative Texts

- Text explaining a natural phenomenon

- Text introducing books or films

- Activity program; advertisement

Length of text: approximately 230 words
