What are the objectives of teaching the Vietnamese language subject?
According to Section 3 of the General education program in Literature issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the objectives of teaching the Vietnamese language subject include:
- Assisting students in forming and developing core traits with specific expressions: love for nature, family, homeland; awareness of origins; admiration for beauty and kindness with healthy emotions; enthusiasm for learning, appreciation for labor; honesty and integrity in learning and life; responsibility toward themselves, family, society, and the surrounding environment.
- Helping students to initially form general abilities, developing language skills across all reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills at a basic level: accurate, fluent reading of texts; understanding the content and main information of texts; making connections and comparisons beyond the text; correct spelling and grammar; ability to write sentences, paragraphs, and short essays (primarily narrative and descriptive); clear expression; understanding the speaker's opinions.
- Developing literary skills with the requirement of distinguishing poetry and prose, knowing how to read poetry and stories; recognizing the beauty of artistic language; having imagination and understanding, and being moved by the beauty and goodness of humanity and the world around as depicted in literary texts.

- Form and develop in students essential traits: patriotism, compassion, diligence, honesty, and responsibility; nurture the soul, shape character, and develop individual personality.
Literature helps students discover themselves and the world around them, understand humanity, have a rich spiritual life, uphold humane living and dealing concepts; love for Vietnamese language and literature; awareness of national origins and identity, contribute to the preservation and development of Vietnamese cultural values; open-mindedness to global cultural achievements and international integration capability.
- Contribute to helping students develop common abilities: self-reliance and self-study, communication and cooperation, problem-solving, and creativity.
Particularly, Literature helps students develop linguistic and literary abilities: refining reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills; possessing a foundational general knowledge system of Vietnamese language and literature, developing figurative and logical thinking, and forming the fundamental scholarly prowess of a cultured individual; knowing how to create common texts; knowing how to perceive and evaluate literary texts in particular and communication products and aesthetic values in general in life.
What are the required specific competencies after completing the Vietnamese language curricula?
According to Section 4 of the General education program in Literature issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the required specific competencies after completing the Vietnamese language curricula include:

Literature contributes to forming and developing in students essential traits and general abilities at levels appropriate to the subject and grade level as regulated in the overall program.
* Specific competencies
- For the primary level

Read correctly, fluently, and expressively; understand the main content of texts, mainly explicit content; initially understand the implicit content like the theme and lesson learned from the text.
At the primary level, reading requirements include reading technique and comprehension skills. For students in the early grades (grades 1 and 2), focus on correct reading with fitting speed and comprehension of simple text content.
From grades 1 to 3, correctly spell, use vocabulary, and grammar; write some sentences, short paragraphs;
Write narratives recounting stories they read, events they've witnessed or participated in, or imagined stories; describe common objects and phenomena; introduce objects and activities familiar to students' lives.
Write paragraphs expressing students' emotions and thoughts when reading a story, poem, or witnessing an event that evokes significant emotion; express opinions on a simple issue in learning and life;
Compose various types of documents like self-introductions, messages, invitations, schedules, applications, etc.; initially write following a process; writings should have an introduction, body, and conclusion.
Present ideas and emotions clearly; initially know how to use appropriate gestures and postures when speaking; clearly narrate a story read or heard; share and exchange emotions, attitudes, and thoughts on discussed issues; explain a simple object or process.
Listen and understand with a fitting attitude and grasp the basic content; recognize the speaker's emotions; know how to respond to what has been heard.

Differentiate between narrative and poetry texts (prose pieces and verses); recognize the content of texts and the writer's emotions and attitudes; initially understand the effect of some literary text elements (language, character, plot, verse, comparison, personification).
Know how to associate, imagine, and express with literary traits in writing and speaking.
For grades 1 and 2 students: recognize who or what the text is about; identify characters in stories, rhymes in poetry; differentiate between stories and poems.
