Issuance of the schedule of School Year 2024-2025 in Hanoi City, Vietnam
On August 20, 2024, the People's Committee of Hanoi City promulgated Decision 4354/QD-UBND of 2024 on the issuance of a time frame plan for the 2024-2025 school year for preschool education, general education, and continuing education in Hanoi City.
According to Decision 4354/QD-UBND of 2024, the time frame for the 2024-2025 school year for preschool education, general education, and continuing education in Hanoi City is as follows:
(1) The earliest date for students to start school is one week before the official opening day. Particularly for the first grade, the earliest start date is two weeks before the official opening day.
(2) The entire City will hold the opening ceremony on September 5, 2024 (Thursday).
(3) The first semester ends before January 18, 2025; the program is completed, and the school year ends before May 31, 2025.
(4) The primary education completion assessment and the recognition of Lower secondary school graduation will be completed before June 30, 2025.
(5) Admission to entrance classes will be completed before July 31, 2025.
(6) The upper secondary school graduation exam in 2025 is scheduled to take place on June 26 and June 27, 2025.
(7) Other national exams are organized according to the Ministry of Education and Training's regulations and guidelines.
(8) Starting and ending dates of the first semester (HKI); second semester (HKII); and the end of the school year.
(9) Holidays during the school year
- Holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year) breaks during the school year are implemented according to the Labor Code and the annual guiding documents.- Teachers' annual leave is taken during the summer break or can be scheduled at other times during the year to match specific characteristics and the school year's timeline.

What are the objectives of general education in Vietnam?
Based on Article 29 of the Education Law 2019, the objectives of general education in Vietnam are as follows:
- General education aims to comprehensively develop learners in terms of morality, intellect, physical health, aesthetics, basic skills, personal capacity, dynamism and creativity; to form socialist Vietnamese human personality and civic responsibility; and to prepare learners to continue higher education, vocational education, or join the workforce, build and defend the country.
- Primary education aims to form the foundational basis for the development of students' morality, intellect, physical health, aesthetics, and capacity; preparing students to continue with Lower secondary school education.
- Lower secondary school education aims to consolidate and develop the results of primary education; ensuring students have foundational general education knowledge, basic technical knowledge, and vocational orientation to continue upper secondary school education or vocational education.
- upper secondary school education aims to equip students with civic knowledge; ensuring students consolidate and develop the results of Lower secondary school education, complete general education knowledge, and have basic technical and vocational orientation knowledge; providing conditions to develop personal ability to choose a development direction, continue higher education, vocational education, or join the workforce, build and defend the country.
Requirements on the content and methods of general education in Vietnam
Based on Article 30 of the Education Law 2019, the requirements on the content and methods of general education are as follows:
- The content of general education must ensure general, basic, comprehensive, vocational, and systematic qualities; be connected with real life, suitable to the psychological age of students, meeting the objectives of education at each educational level.
- The content requirements for each educational level are stipulated as follows:
+ Primary education must ensure that students have a foundation for comprehensive development in terms of physical health, emotions, social skills; have simple and necessary knowledge of nature, society, and humans; have the perception of social ethics; have basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and calculating; have habits of physical training, hygiene maintenance; have basic understanding of singing, dancing, music, and arts.
+ Lower secondary school education consolidates and develops the content learned in primary education, ensuring students have basic general knowledge about Vietnamese language, mathematics, national history; other knowledge about social sciences, natural sciences, law, informatics, foreign languages; have basic technical and vocational orientation knowledge.
+ Upper secondary school education consolidates and develops the content learned in Lower secondary school, completing the content of general education; ensuring the standard basic, comprehensive general knowledge and vocational orientation for students, with advanced content in some subjects to develop capacity, meeting students' aspirations.
- General education methods promote students' activeness, self-discipline, proactiveness, creativity suitable to the characteristics of each subject, class, and the features of students; fostering self-study methods, learning interest, cooperation skills, independent thinking ability; comprehensively developing learners' qualities and capacities; increasing the application of information and communication technology in the educational process.
