Currently, many people wonder, "How old are people, who were born in 2009?" and "What grade are students born in 2009 in?".

As of the current time (year 2024), students born in 2009 are 15 years old.

Based on the provisions of Clause 1, Article 28 of the Education Law 2019:

Levels and ages of general education

1. The levels and ages of general education are regulated as follows:

a) Primary education is conducted for 5 school years, from grade 1 to the end of grade 5. The age of students entering grade 1 is 6 years, calculated according to the year;

b) Lower secondary education is conducted for 4 school years, from grade 6 to the end of grade 9. Students entering grade 6 must complete the primary education program. The age of students entering grade 6 is 11 years, calculated according to the year;

c) Upper secondary education is conducted for 3 school years, from grade 10 to the end of grade 12. Students entering grade 10 must have lower secondary school graduation certificates. The age of students entering grade 10 is 15 years, calculated according to the year.*

Additionally, based on Article 33 of the Charter issued with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT:

Age of students in upper secondary schools

1. The age of students entering grade 6 is 11 years. The age of students entering grade 10 is 15 years. For students who skip grades in previous educational levels or students entering educational levels at an age different from the regulated age, the age for entering grades 6 and 10 is adjusted based on the age of graduation from the previous educational level.

2. Ethnic minority students, disabled students, students with special difficult circumstances, and students returning from abroad may enter educational levels at an age up to 3 years older than the regulated age.

3. Students must not repeat a grade more than 3 times in one educational level.

4. Students with good health and early intellectual development may enter school at an earlier age or skip grades within an educational level. The review for each specific case is conducted as follows:

a) Parents or guardians submit a request to the school.

b) The principal establishes an assessment and advisory council, consisting of representatives from the school's leadership and the school's parent representative board, and the teachers from the grade the student is attending.

c) Based on the assessment results of the council, the principal considers and decides.

5. Students of the regulated age who return from abroad and children of foreigners working in Vietnam are allowed to attend secondary schools in their place of residence or other secondary schools if such schools can accommodate. The review for each specific case is conducted as follows:

a) Parents or guardians submit a request to the school.

b) The principal organizes an assessment of the student’s level and arranges for them to enter an appropriate class.

Typically, the age to enter grade 10 of upper secondary education is 15 years, calculated according to the year.

Students who are 15 years old now will enter grade 10 in the 2024-2025 school year.

Note: Except for students who repeat grades or enter school earlier/later than the regulated age.

Thus, as of 2024, students born in 2009 are 15 years old and in grade 10 in the 2024-2025 school year.
