How to compare mixed numbers for grade 5 in Vietnam?
A mixed number is a combination of an integer and a fraction. The integer part appears first, and the fractional part is always less than 1. Students will learn to compare mixed numbers in Grade 5 mathematics.
Currently, there are two specific methods for comparing mixed numbers as follows:
Method 1: Compare the integer part first, then the fractional part
- The mixed number with a larger integer part is greater; the one with a smaller integer part is lesser.
- If the integer parts are equal, then compare the fractional parts. The mixed number with a larger fractional part is greater, and conversely, the one with a smaller fractional part is lesser.
Method 2: Convert mixed numbers to fractions
Another way to compare mixed numbers is to convert both mixed numbers into fractions and then compare the resulting fractions.
