How to compare mixed numbers for grade 5 in Vietnam?
A mixed number is a combination of an integer and a fraction. The integer part appears first, and the fractional part is always less than 1. Students will learn to compare mixed numbers in Grade 5 mathematics.
Currently, there are two specific methods for comparing mixed numbers as follows:
Method 1: Compare the integer part first, then the fractional part
- The mixed number with a larger integer part is greater; the one with a smaller integer part is lesser.
- If the integer parts are equal, then compare the fractional parts. The mixed number with a larger fractional part is greater, and conversely, the one with a smaller fractional part is lesser.
Method 2: Convert mixed numbers to fractions
Another way to compare mixed numbers is to convert both mixed numbers into fractions and then compare the resulting fractions.
What experiential and practical activities are included in grade 5 Mathematics curriculum in Vietnam?
Based on the General Education Program for Mathematics issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, schools are to organize the following activities for Grade 5 students and may additionally implement other activities depending on specific conditions.
Activity 1: Practicing the application of mathematical knowledge in real life and interdisciplinary topics, such as:
- Combining activities related to calculation, measurement, and estimation, such as: calculating and estimating the volume of certain three-dimensional shapes related to those learned; calculating and estimating speed, distance, and time in uniform motion.
- Collecting, analyzing, and presenting statistical data (through simple situations related to economic, social development issues or global issues like climate change, sustainable development, financial education, border and island sovereignty, STEM education, etc.).
- Practicing reasonable buying, selling, exchanging, and spending; calculating profit and loss in transactions; calculating interest rates in savings deposits and loans.
Activity 2: Organizing extracurricular activities (e.g., the game "Tangram", or "Fun Learning - Learning Fun"; activities related to buying, selling, and exchanging goods; assembling, folding, arranging shapes; flipping coins, dice, ...) related to reviewing, consolidating mathematical knowledge or solving problems arising in practical situations.
Activity 3 (if the school has the conditions to implement): Organizing exchanges with students who have capabilities and an interest in Mathematics both within the school and with other schools.
