Article 4 of the Regulation on the national exam for selecting excellent students issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT provides the provisions for candidates as follows:
Candidates
1. For the national exam for selecting excellent students:
a) High school students who achieve a good conduct (or behavior) and academic performance (or academic competence) rating according to the results of the semester (or school year) preceding the exam and are selected for the competition team of the participating unit;
b) Each candidate is allowed to participate in only one subject exam in a school year.
2. For the national Olympic team selection exam:
High school students who are in one of the following categories:
a) Selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from among students who have won awards in the national exam for selecting excellent students of the same school year, according to descending order of exam scores, ensuring that the number of selected students for each subject does not exceed eight (08) times the number of students needed for the national team to participate in the international Olympic competition for that subject;
b) Did not participate in the national exam for selecting excellent students in the same school year but were a member of the national team to participate in regional or international Olympic competitions in the previous school year.
**** Each candidate is allowed to participate in one subject exam in the national exam for selecting excellent students.

Based on the provisions in Clause 1, Article 12 of the Regulation on selecting excellent students at the national level issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT:
Number of candidates
1. For the national exam for selecting excellent students: Each participating unit is allowed to register a maximum of 10 candidates for each subject team (except Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City units, which are allowed to register a maximum of 20 candidates per subject team).
2. For the national Olympic team selection exam: The number of candidates for each subject each year is summoned by the Ministry of Education and Training, ensuring full compliance with the requirements stipulated in Clause 2, Article 4 of this Regulation.
According to the above regulations, the national team for selecting excellent students will have a maximum of 10 candidates for each subject (except for the units of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, which are allowed to register a maximum of 20 candidates per subject team).
What subjects are included in the national exam for selecting excellent students in Vietnam?
Based on Article 5 of the Regulation on selecting excellent students at the national level issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT:
Subjects, exam content, exam form, and exam duration
1. Subjects:
a) For the national exam for selecting excellent students, the subjects tested are: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, and Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese). Exams will only be considered for subjects with at least 05 units registered to participate. Adjustments to the subjects (if any) will be decided by the Minister of Education and Training;
b) For the national Olympic team selection exam, the subjects tested are: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics.
2. Exam content: It is within the high school education program, specialized subject content at the high school level; for the national Olympic team selection exam, the exam content approaches international and regional Olympic standards.
3. Exam form, exam duration:
a) The national exam for selecting excellent students: There are two exam sessions for the subjects Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, and Foreign Languages; there is one exam session for the subjects Literature, History, Geography; the exam duration is 180 minutes. Informatics is tested in the form of programming on a computer; other subjects are tested in the form of writing on paper; Foreign Language exams also include an oral test where candidates have 05 minutes for preparation and 05 minutes for recording;
b) The national Olympic team selection exam: There are two exam sessions for each subject; for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, there is an additional practical exam session; the exam duration for Informatics is 300 minutes, for Mathematics is 270 minutes, and for other subjects is 240 minutes. The practical exam session duration for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology is 180 minutes.
The subjects in the national exam for selecting excellent students include: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, and Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese).
However, if there are not at least 05 units registered for the subject, the exam will not be considered.
Additionally, adjustments to the subjects (if any) will be decided by the Minister of Education and Training.
