Pursuant to Clause 5, Article 10 of the Undergraduate Training Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT on the assessment of academic results by semester and academic year:

  1. Students are classified according to their academic performance using either the semester average, annual average, or cumulative average as follows:

a) On a 4-point scale:

From 3.6 to 4.0: Excellent;

From 3.2 to below 3.6: Good;

From 2.5 to below 3.2: Fair;

From 2.0 to below 2.5: Average;

From 1.0 to below 2.0: Weak;

Below 1.0: Poor.

b) On a 10-point scale:

From 9.0 to 10.0: Excellent;

From 8.0 to below 9.0: Good;

From 7.0 to below 8.0: Fair;

From 5.0 to below 7.0: Average;

From 4.0 to below 5.0: Weak;

Below 4.0: Poor.

Thus, students achieving a semester average, annual average, or cumulative average from 3.2 to below 3.6 will graduate with good grade.

In addition, based on Clause 3, Article 14 of the Undergraduate Training Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, the classification of graduation is determined based on the cumulative average score for the entire course. However, the classification of graduates with an excellent or very good average score will be downgraded by one level if they fall into one of the following cases:

- The volume of retaken courses exceeds 5% of the total credits required for the entire program;

- The student has been disciplined at the level of a warning or higher during their study period.

What are conditions for students in Vietnam to graduate with good grade?

Pursuant to Article 14 of the Undergraduate Training Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT on the recognition of graduation and issuance of diplomas:

  1. Students are evaluated and recognized for graduation when they meet the following conditions:

a) Accumulate sufficient curriculum, credits, and complete other mandatory contents as required by the training program, achieving the program’s outcome standards;

b) The cumulative average score for the entire course is at least average;

c) At the time of graduation consideration, the student is not subject to criminal prosecution or is not in the period of being disciplined to the extent of suspension from study.

  1. Students who meet the graduation conditions will be recognized for graduation and issued diplomas by the head of the training institution within 03 months from the time the student fulfills all graduation conditions and completes obligations with the training institution.
  1. The classification of graduates is determined based on the cumulative average score for the entire course as stipulated in Clause 5, Article 10 of this Regulation. However, the classification of students with an excellent or very good cumulative average will be downgraded by one level if they fall into one of the following cases:

a) The volume of retaken courses exceeds 5% of the total credits required for the entire program;

b) The student has been disciplined at the level of a warning or higher during their study period.

Thus, students are recognized to graduate with honors when they meet the following conditions:

- At the time of graduation consideration, the student is not subject to criminal prosecution or is not in the period of being disciplined to the extent of suspension from study.

What are circumstances where a university student in Vietnam can temporarily discontinue their studies and retain previously earned results?

Pursuant to Article 15 of the Undergraduate Training Regulation issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, university students can temporarily discontinue their studies and retain previously earned results in the following cases:

- Being mobilized into the armed forces;

- Being assigned by competent authorities to represent the nation in international competitions and tournaments;

- Being sick, pregnant, or involved in an accident requiring long-term treatment with certification from a competent medical institution as prescribed by the Ministry of Health;

- For other personal reasons but have studied for at least 01 semester at the training institution and are not in cases where consideration for expulsion or disciplinary action is required.
