How many national-level excellent student selection exams are there in a year in Vietnam?
Based on Article 3 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the organization of national excellent student contests is as follows:
Organization of national excellent student contests
- Annually, the Ministry of Education and Training organizes two national excellent student contests, including: the national high school excellent student contest (referred to as the national excellent student contest) and the high school student selection contest for the national teams to compete in international and regional Olympiads (referred to as the Olympic team selection contest).
- Each Department of Education and Training, each university, school of higher education (that is not part of a university) that organizes specialized teaching programs, is a contesting unit; Viet Bac Highland General School is allowed to register as a contesting unit.
Thus, a year will have 2 national excellent student contests, including:
- The national high school excellent student contest (referred to as the national excellent student contest);- The high school student selection contest for the national teams to compete in international and regional Olympiads (referred to as the Olympic team selection contest).

Who are the candidates eligible to participate in the national-level excellent student selection exams in Vietnam?
Based on Article 4 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the eligible participants for the national excellent student contest are as follows:
- For the national excellent student contest:
+ High school students, with good conduct (or behaviour) and academic performance (or learning capacity) at the level of fairly good or above according to the results of the most recent semester (or academic year) before the contest, and are selected for the contest unit's team;
+ Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one subject per academic year.
- For the Olympic team selection contest:
High school students who fall within one of the following categories:
+ Selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from among the students who have won prizes in the same academic year's national excellent student contest, based on descending exam scores, ensuring that the number of students selected for each subject does not exceed eight (08) times the number of students needed for the national team to compete in international Olympiads for that subject;
+ Have not participated in the same academic year's national excellent student contest, but were members of the national team that competed in regional Olympiads; members of the national team that competed in international Olympiads in the previous academic year.
What subjects are included in the national excellent student contest in Vietnam?
Based on Clause 1, Article 5 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the subjects included in the national excellent student contest are as follows:
- For the national excellent student contest: The contest includes the subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, and Foreign Languages (English, Russian, French, Chinese). Contests for a subject will only be organized if there are at least 05 units registered. Any adjustments to the contest subjects (if any) will be decided by the Minister of Education and Training;
- For the Olympic team selection contest: The contest includes the subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics.
What are responsibilities of candidates when participating in the national excellent student contest in Vietnam?
Based on Article 24 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT, the responsibilities of candidates participating in the national excellent student contest are as follows:
- Be present at the exam location on the specified date and time. Candidates who arrive later than the start time will not be allowed to take the exam.
- Present the exam card (for the national excellent student contest) or the citizen identification card (for the Olympic team selection contest) before entering the examination room.
- Sit in the designated seat according to the exam number in the examination room; sign the attendance list for each exam session.
- Only bring into the examination room the materials and items specified in Article 23 of the Regulation on national excellent student contests issued with Circular 17/2023/TT-BGDDT.
Do not bring into the examination room: carbon paper, correction pens, alcoholic beverages; weapons and explosive, flammable materials; materials, communication devices, or information that can be used to cheat during the exam and grading process.
- When receiving the exam paper, check the number of pages of the exam paper, write the exam number on the exam paper. If there is any missing page, torn, damaged, smudged, or unclear exam paper, report it to the proctor within 10 minutes from the start of the exam.
- During the time in the examination room, maintain order; do not exchange, discuss, or cheat on the exam; if there is a need to speak, raise a hand to ask for permission and only speak when allowed by the proctor; do not leave the examination room during the exam duration.
In necessary cases, only leave the examination room with the proctor's permission and under the supervision of the external proctor; leaving the examination room, exam area in case of emergency requires the supervision of the police until the end of the exam session and is decided by the Chairman of the Examination Council. Report any cheating behavior in the exam to the responsible person.
- The exam must be written with one type of pen, one type of ink; do not use red ink, pencil (except for drawing circles with a compass); do not mark or make special symbols in the exam paper; cross out incorrect parts without erasing or covering by any means.
- Informatics candidates do the exam and save the work on the computer's hard disk; keep all sealed positions on the computer intact until the end of the exam time. In case of taking the exam on a computer connected to a local/intranet network, follow the Examination Organization Guidelines.
- When the time is up:
+ For written exams: All candidates must stop writing immediately to submit the exam paper; write the number of answer sheets submitted and sign the exam paper receipt form (including if no answer was written);
+ For Informatics exams: All candidates must turn off the computer screen immediately. When allowed by the proctor, candidates can turn the computer screen back on and unseal the CD drive to save the work on the CD; then, the candidate witnesses the proctor print their work from the CD; the candidate signs the CD and the printed paper.
In case of taking the exam on a computer connected to a local/intranet network, follow the Examination Organization Guidelines;
+ For the oral sessions of the Foreign Language exams in the national excellent student contest and the practical exams of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in the Olympic team selection contest: Candidates follow the Examination Organization Guidelines.
- After the exam is over, candidates can only leave the examination room when permitted by the proctor.
- Candidates are responsible for keeping their exam paper safe from the time they receive it until the end of the exam duration.
