How many days left until the start of the academic year 2024-2025 for university enrollment in Vietnam?

Recently, according to the regulations in Decision 1139/QD-BGDDT 2024 on the Implementation Plan for University Admissions and College Admissions in Preschool Education in 2024, there are two important dates in August 2024:

Notification time for the first round of successful candidates:

No later than 5:00 PM on August 19, 2024.

Online enrollment confirmation time for the first round on the System:

No later than 5:00 PM on August 27, 2024.

Additionally, in Subsection 8, Section 1 of Official Dispatch 1957/BGDDT-GDDH 2024, the enrollment confirmation guide is as follows:

I. For candidates

8. Enrollment confirmation:

- For candidates admitted under the direct admission category, from July 22, 2024, to 5:00 PM on July 31, 2024, candidates can confirm their enrollment on the System (those who have confirmed enrollment will not be allowed to register for further admissions, except for cases permitted by the head of the training institution to defer enrollment). In cases where enrollment is not confirmed, candidates can continue to register for further admissions on the System or the National Public Service Portal like other candidates for the training institutions to consider, and if admitted, candidates will confirm enrollment as per the common schedule;

- No later than 5:00 PM on August 27, 2024, all admitted candidates must complete the online enrollment confirmation for the first round on the System.

9. From August 28, 2024, to December 2024, candidates wishing to apply for supplementary admissions rounds of the training institutions should follow the Detailed Admissions Plan posted on the admissions information page of the training institution (if the training institution conducts supplementary admissions). Candidates who were admitted and confirmed enrollment will not be eligible for supplementary admissions, except for cases permitted by the head of the training institution to defer enrollment.

10. Candidates submit the necessary admissions documents at the training institution (according to the time and location guidelines of the training institution). Candidates applying for courses with talent tests, using talent test scores from another training institution for application, must contact the training institution to register for the test, take the test, or submit talent test scores.

The estimated enrollment time for the 2024-2025 academic year will occur after August 27, 2024.

Thus, as of now, 4-5 days remain for students to potentially return to school.

What are the requirements for university students who want to change majors at the beginning of the new academic year in Vietnam?

Based on Article 16 of the University Training Regulation, issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT, students can be considered to transfer to another major when they meet the following 4 conditions:

[1] Not being a freshman or final-year student, not under consideration for expulsion, and still having sufficient study time according to the regulations in Clause 5, Article 2 of Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT;

[2] Meeting the admission criteria of the program, major, of the main campus (or branch) in the same enrollment year;

[3] The training institution, main campus (or branch) has sufficient quality assurance conditions and has not exceeded the training capacity for that program, major according to the current regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training;

[4] Having the consent of the heads of the specialized units in charge of the program, major, the person in charge of the branch (where transferring from and to), and the head of the training institution.

Can university students in Vietnam who take a leave of absence for personal reasons be allowed to return to study?

According to Article 15 of the University Training Regulation, issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT:

Temporary leave, withdrawal from study

1. Students are entitled to temporary leave and retention of academic results in the following cases:

a) Being conscripted into the armed forces;

b) Being sent to represent the country in international competitions or tournaments by an authorized agency;

c) Suffering from illness, maternity, or accidents requiring long-term treatment with certification from an authorized medical institution as per the regulations of the Ministry of Health;

d) For other personal reasons, provided they have studied for at least one semester at the training institution and are not under consideration for expulsion or disciplinary action.

2. The period of temporary leave for personal reasons must be counted within the official study time specified in Clause 5, Article 2 of this Regulation.

3. Students requesting to withdraw from study for personal reasons, except those under consideration for expulsion or disciplinary action. Those students who want to return to study must re-apply for admission like other candidates.

4. The training institution's regulations should specify conditions, authority, procedures for temporary leave, re-admission, and withdrawal; the retention and recognition of accumulated academic results for students who withdraw.

Thus, according to the above regulations, university students who take a leave of absence for personal reasons are allowed to return to study.

However, if they wish to return, they must re-apply for admission like other candidates.
