Based on Article 7 of the Undergraduate Training Regulations, issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT:

Organization of Course Registration

1. Before the beginning of each semester, the training institution guides students to register for courses on the institution's course registration system.

2. Students following the credit-based system must register for the classes of the courses they plan to take in the semester, including: new courses, some failed courses (to retake), and some passed courses (to improve grades, if any) based on the list of courses offered and the registration conditions for each course.

3. Students following the academic year system register to retake the failed courses they plan to take in the semester, register to improve grades, or register for elective courses as prescribed by the training program.

4. The institution's regulations stipulate the process, procedures, organization, management, storage of students' course registrations for each semester, withdrawal of registered courses; specifically stipulate the study load limits for students per semester within the following framework:

a) The minimum load is no less than 2/3 of the average load per semester according to the standard study plan;

b) The maximum load does not exceed 3/2 of the average load per semester according to the standard study plan.

Thus, according to the above regulation, students following the credit-based system must register for their courses at the beginning of the year, registering for new courses and, at the same time, may register for failed courses (retake) or courses to improve grades in that semester.

*Note: Course registration in each semester must comply with the study load limits for students, which are within the following framework:

- The minimum load is no less than 2/3 of the average load per semester according to the standard study plan;- The maximum load does not exceed 3/2 of the average load per semester according to the standard study plan.

Additionally, the institution provides detailed guidance during the registration period at the beginning of each semester, so students should follow the institution's information to get the most specific details.

How are students studying based on number of credits evaluated and graded in Vietnam?

Based on Article 9 of the Undergraduate Training Regulations, issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT as follows:

- For each course, students are evaluated through at least two component grades; for courses with less than 2 credits, there may be only one evaluation grade.

Component grades are evaluated on a 10-point scale. The evaluation methods, forms, and weights of each component grade are specified in the detailed course syllabus.

Online evaluation forms are applied when ensuring honesty, fairness, and objectivity, similar to direct evaluation, contributing no more than 50% of the course weight; the organization of the defense and evaluation of theses, projects can be conducted online with higher weights if the following conditions are additionally met:

+ The evaluation is performed by a specialized committee consisting of at least 3 members;

+ The online defense and evaluation form is agreed upon by the committee members and the student;

+ The progress of the online defense is fully recorded and stored.

- Students absent from exams or evaluations without legitimate reasons receive a zero. Students absent with legitimate reasons can take the exam or evaluation at another time and their first-time score is recorded.

- Course grades are calculated from the total component grades multiplied by their respective weights, rounded to one decimal place, and assigned letter grades as below, except for cases stipulated in point d of this clause.

- Passing grades with sub-levels, applied to courses counted towards the GPA, include:

A: from 8.5 to 10.0;B: from 7.0 to 8.4;C: from 5.5 to 6.9;D: from 4.0 to 5.4.

- Passing grades without sub-levels, applied to courses only requiring a pass, not counted towards the GPA:

P: from 5.0 upwards.

c) Failing grade:

F: below 4.0.

- Special cases using letter grades not counted towards the GPA:

I: Incomplete due to permitted exam or assessment postponement;X: Incomplete due to insufficient data;R: Course credits exempted and recognized.

How is credit-based study performance processed in Vietnam?

Based on Article 11 of the Undergraduate Training Regulations, issued with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT as follows:

- At the end of each main semester, students are given academic warnings based on the following conditions:

+ The total number of failed credits in the semester exceeds 50% of the registered load in that semester, or the total amount of outstanding credits from the beginning of the course exceeds 24

;+ The semester GPA is below 0.8 for the first semester of the course, below 1.0 for subsequent semesters;

+ The cumulative GPA is below 1.2 for first-year students, below 1.4 for second-year students, below 1.6 for third-year students, and below 1.8 for subsequent years.

- Students are expelled in the following cases:

+ The number of academic warnings or the level of academic warnings exceeds the limits set by the training institution;

+ The study period exceeds the limit specified in clause 5, Article 2 of Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT.

- The training institution's regulations specifically stipulate:

+ The selection of conditions for academic warnings, the limit on the number or level of academic warnings but not exceeding 2 consecutive warnings;+ The process and procedures for academic warnings, expulsion; the announcement of applicable forms to students;+ The retention of accumulated academic results in cases where students are expelled.
