Under Section 6 of the Program issued with Circular 46/2020/TT-BGDDT, the general orientation for the teaching methods of the National Defense and Security Education subject at the upper secondary level is clearly outlined as follows:

- Encourage proactive, positive, and creative learning from students; avoid one-sided imposition and mechanical memorization; focus on self-study abilities so students can explore, expand their knowledge base, and further develop essential qualities and competencies after graduating high school; notably, train skills to apply defense and security knowledge to identify and solve practical issues.

- Apply educational methods flexibly, creatively, and appropriately to educational goals, content, student audiences, and specific conditions. Teachers may combine multiple teaching methods within one topic.

Use traditional teaching methods (lecturing, discussion, etc.) to enhance students' proactivity and engagement.

Strengthen the use of advanced teaching methods based on leveraging scientific and technological achievements in teachers' instruction and students' learning, particularly by applying the ongoing digital technology revolution, information, and communication to highlight students' active learning roles (discussion, role-playing, practice, etc.).

Organize learning through diverse and flexible formats; combine individual and group learning, inside and outside the classroom.

Teachers and students in the National Defense and Security Education subject need the skills to research and reference defense and security knowledge nationwide and worldwide through the system of officially licensed electronic information portals issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications to promptly consolidate, supplement, and update new knowledge for study, research, and teaching.
