In Vietnam, will the number of exam subjects in the High School Graduation Exam be reduced from 06 to 04?

Under Article 3 of Circular 15/2020/TT-BGDDT (amended by Clause 1, Article 1 of Circular 02/2024/TT-BGDDT), the papers are defined as follows:

 Papers

The exam consists of 5 papers, including: 3 independent papers are Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese and Korean); 1 paper of natural science (a combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology); 1 paper of social science (a combination of History, Geography, and Civic Education) with respect to students of compulsory education program at high school level or the papers of History and Geography with respect to students of continuing education program at high school level.

Additionally, under Article 3 of the most recent High School Graduation Exam Regulation issued with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT (effective from February 8, 2025), the papers in the High School Graduation Exam 2025 are defined as follows:

Paers

The exam is organized in 03 sessions: 01 session for the Literature paper, 01 session for the Mathematics paper, and 01 session for the elective paper comprising 02 subjects chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics and Law Education, Informatics, Industrial-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Industrial Technology), Agriculture-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Agricultural Technology), Foreign Language (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean).

According to Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the regulations on High School Graduation Exam 2025 have changed the exam subjects from organizing 5 papers to 03 exam sessions, including:

- 01 session for the Literature paper

- 01 session for the Mathematics paper

- 01 session for an elective paper with 02 subjects comprising 02 subjects chosen from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics and Law Education, Informatics, Industrial-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Industrial Technology), Agriculture-oriented Technology (abbreviated as Agricultural Technology), Foreign Language (English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean).

Thus, candidates can choose 02 elective subjects from the remaining 09 subjects of the 12th-grade curriculum. Therefore the number of exam subjects in the High School Graduation Exam be reduced from 06 to 04. Additionally, the foreign language papers willno longer be mandatory

Who is eligible to take the High School Graduation Exam 2025 in Vietnam?

According to Article 19 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, regulations on candidates and eligibility requirements for taking the exam include:

Candidates and eligibility requirements for taking the exam

1. Eligible candidates include:

a) Individuals who have completed the General Education/Continuing Education program in the year of the exam;

b) Individuals who have completed the General Education/Continuing Education program but have not graduated in previous years;

c) Individuals who already hold a High School Diploma but retake the exam to use the results for enrollment registration;

d) Individuals who already hold a Post-secondary Diploma who retake the exam to use the results for enrollment registration.

2. Eligibility requirements for taking the exam

a) Eligible candidates must register and submit all required documents on time;

b) Candidates under point d, clause 1 of this Article must ensure they have studied and met the requirements for sufficient high school cultural knowledge volume as stipulated by the Education Law and current guidance documents from the Ministry of Education and Training.

The candidates eligible for taking the High School Graduation Exam 2025 include:

- Individuals who have completed the General Education/Continuing Education program in the year of the exam;

- Individuals who have completed the General Education/Continuing Education program but have not graduated in previous years;

- Individuals who already hold a High School Diploma but retake the exam to use the results for enrollment registration;

- Individuals who already hold a Post-secondary Diploma who retake the exam to use the results for enrollment registration.

What does the application for taking the High School Graduation Exam in Vietnam include?

Under clause 3, Article 20 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the application for taking the High School Graduation Exam in Vietnam includes:

- Exam Registration Form;

- Valid certificates for priority/encouragement policies (if any);

- 4x6-sized photos taken in the style of ID/citizen ID card, taken no more than 06 months before submitting the application;

- Copies of the academic records at the upper secondary level (for candidates under point b, clause 1, Article 19 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT);

- A copy of the High School Diploma (for candidates under point c, clause 1, Article 19 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT);

- A copy of the Post-secondary Diploma, along with a copy of the Academic Record or transcript for cultural subjects at the upper secondary level as stipulated by the Education Law and current guidance documents from the Ministry of Education and Training (for candidates under point d, clause 1, Article 19 of Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT);

- Confirmation of reserved scores (if any) from the Principal of the high school where the candidate took the exam in the previous year or from the Department of Education and Training if the candidate took the exam in another province.

*Note: Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT is effective from February 8, 2025
