After years of fighting, our forces and the French confronted each other fiercely on multiple fronts. Recognizing the strategic importance of Dien Bien Phu, the French colonialists decided to transform it into the strongest entrenched fortification in Indochina, with a robust defense system and modern weaponry. They believed our army could never defeat this stronghold. Faced with this situation, the Campaign Command, led by General Vo Nguyen Giap, decided to launch a general offensive to annihilate the enemy's fortified group. On March 13, 1954, the Dien Bien Phu campaign officially commenced. Initially, we planned to "strike fast, win swiftly," but after carefully considering the situation, General Vo Nguyen Giap made an important decision: to adopt a "fight steadily, slowly advance" strategy, prolonging the campaign to preserve forces and defeat the enemy gradually. In the following days, each vital position of the French was successively eliminated. On May 7, 1954, the decisive battle took place. Our forces launched a general assault on the center of the fortified group, capturing General De Castries and the entire enemy Command. The "Determined to Fight, Determined to Win" flag waved above the command bunker, marking the complete victory of the Dien Bien Phu campaign. The Dien Bien Phu victory not only concluded 9 years of resistance against the French colonialists but also contributed to the global movement for independence. General Vo Nguyen Giap’s wise strategic decisions created one of Vietnam's most glorious military achievements. The Dien Bien Phu campaign will forever be a symbol of the indomitable will and patriotism, demonstrating the remarkable strategic prowess of the legendary General. |
