I. Summary of 'Sự tích hồ Gươm'

During the period when the Ming invaders occupied Vietnam, Le Loi led the Lam Son uprising to fight against the invaders. Once, he accidentally found a magical sword. This sword was believed to be given by Long Quan to help Le Loi drive away the Ming invaders.

With the help of the magical sword, Le Loi achieved many significant victories and ultimately defeated the Ming, regaining the country's independence. After the war ended, Le Loi became the king and ascended the throne as Le Thai To.

One day, when Le Loi was boating on Lake Ta Vong (the old name of Hoan Kiem Lake), a giant golden turtle emerged from under the water. The Golden Turtle requested Le Loi to return the magical sword. Understanding that his mission was accomplished, Le Loi returned the sword to the Golden Turtle. The turtle received the sword and dived into the lake, disappearing.

Since then, Lake Ta Vong was renamed Hoan Kiem Lake or "Sword Lake," meaning "the lake of the returned sword." This legend not only explains the lake’s name but also honors the patriotism and unity of the Vietnamese people in their fight against foreign invaders.
