How many semesters are there in an academic year in university in Vietnam?

Based on Article 6 of the Regulations on Undergraduate Training issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT:

Teaching and Learning Plan

  1. The teaching and learning plan details the organization and implementation of training programs by academic year, semester, in accordance with the training form and training organization method.
  1. The annual plan outlines the main timelines of training activities within the academic year for all forms and training programs and is promptly announced to relevant parties before the academic year begins. An academic year has 02 or 03 main semesters with a minimum total of 30 weeks of classes. In addition to the main semesters, the training institution may organize additional auxiliary semesters.
  1. Semester plans include the schedule for course offerings, the format of teaching and learning (direct or online), class schedules, and examination schedules for the courses organized in the semester for the training programs and training forms. Semester plans must be promptly prepared and announced with all necessary information to ensure it is convenient for students to plan and register their study programs.
  1. The timetable specifies the time, location, teaching, and learning activities of each class for training programs. The schedule of regular courses is arranged evenly throughout the weeks of the semester. In case there is a need to concentrate class hours within a specific time, the teaching hours for any course should not exceed 15 hours/week and 4 hours/day.
  1. The training institution’s regulations clearly state the distribution of semesters, time, location, and format of arranging class hours according to these Regulations.

Thus, an academic year in university has 02 or 03 main semesters with a minimum total of 30 weeks of classes. In addition to the main semesters, the training institution may organize additional auxiliary semesters.

Do students following an academic year system in Vietnam have to register for courses?

In Article 7 of the Regulations on Undergraduate Training issued together with Circular 08/2021/TT-BGDDT:

Organization of Study Registration

  1. Before each semester starts, the training institution guides students to register for courses on the institution’s course registration system.
  1. Students studying by credit system must register for classes of the courses they intend to take in the semester, including: new courses, some courses not passed (to retake), and some passed courses (to improve grades, if any), based on the list of offered courses and registration conditions for each course.
  1. Students studying under the academic year system register to retake courses not passed intended to take in the semester, register for grade improvement, or register for elective courses according to the training program's rules.

...

Thus, students following an academic year system still have to register for courses not passed intended to take in the semester, register for grade improvement, or register for elective courses according to the training program's rules.
