Guidelines for Disassembling and Assembling AK Rifles in Vietnam
- Disassembling the gun:
+ Step 1: Remove the magazine and inspect the gun
With your left hand, hold the handguard so that the muzzle points upward, the gun turns to the left. Hold the magazine with your right hand, with four fingers on top and thumb underneath, pressing the magazine catch, push and twist the magazine upward to remove it. Move the firing selector to the firing position, pull the bolt carrier backward fully with your thumb, then release your hand without squeezing the trigger.
+ Step 2: Remove the accessory tube
Lift the gun about 20cm above the table with your left hand, and press on the lid of the spare parts compartment at the stock base with your right index finger to remove the accessory tube. Place the gun down and disassemble each component (see the image below).
+ Step 3: Remove the cleaning rod
Hold the gun with your left hand as in Step 1, open the bayonet up to 45°, pull the cleaning rod upward to the right and remove it, then fold the bayonet back (see the image below).
+ Step 4: Remove the receiver cover
Hold the stock neck with your left hand, turn the gun upward, press the end of the recoil spring guide with your thumb, lift the bottom of the receiver cover with your right hand and remove it.
+ Step 5: Remove the recoil spring assembly
Continue holding the gun with your left hand. Push the recoil spring guide forward with your right hand to detach it from the receiver and then remove it.
+ Step 6: Remove the bolt carrier and bolt
Continue holding the gun in the same position with your left hand. Grip the top of the bolt carrier with your right hand, pull the bolt carrier and bolt fully backward, lift them off and remove from the receiver. Turn the bolt to the right to detach the cam lug from the bolt carrier’s channel and remove the bolt from the carrier (see the image below).
+ Step 7: Remove the gas tube and upper handguard
Hold the bottom handguard with your left hand, turn the gun upward. Rotate the gas tube lever 45° with your right index finger or an accessory tube, then remove the gas tube and upper handguard from the gun.
- Assembling the gun:
The assembly actions are performed in the reverse order of the disassembly actions. Specifically:
+ Step 1: Assemble the gas tube and upper handguard
Hold the gun as during disassembly with your left hand. With your right hand, insert the front end of the gas tube into the cut of the gas block and press the upper handguard down, then rotate the gas tube lever fully downward.
+ Step 2: Assemble the bolt carrier and the bolt
Assemble the bolt into the bolt carrier: Hold the bolt carrier with your right hand as during disassembly, insert the rear of the bolt into the carrier with your left hand, and rotate the bolt from the rear upward to the right until fully aligned.
Assemble the bolt carrier and bolt into the gun: Hold the stock neck with your left hand, slightly turn the gun to the right, insert the piston head into the guide hole in the gas block with your right hand, press the rear of the bolt carrier tightly against the receiver and ensure it’s firmly in place, then push the bolt carrier fully forward.
+ Step 3: Assemble the recoil spring assembly
Hold the gun with your left hand, grasp the rear of the recoil spring guide with your right hand, insert the front of the recoil spring guide into the guide hole in the bolt carrier, press it forward and ensure the legs fit into the longitudinal slots of the receiver.
+ Step 4: Assemble the receiver cover and check the gun’s operation
Assemble the receiver cover: Hold the gun with your left hand, hold the cover with your right hand, fit the front of the cover into the curved cut of the rear sight base, press the cover down until the retaining pin fits into its slot.
Check the gun’s operation: Hold the gun as in Step 1 of the disassembly with your left hand, pull the bolt carrier fully backward with your right hand thumb, and release it. Repeat 2-3 times. Ensure the bolt carrier and bolt move smoothly, squeeze the trigger to check the hammer function, then move the firing selector to the safe position.
+ Step 5: Assemble the cleaning rod
Hold the handguard with your left hand as during disassembly, insert the front of the cleaning rod into the guide hole under the gas block and lower handguard with your right hand, press it down until the rear of the rod fits into its storage cutout under the front sight post.
+ Step 6: Assemble the accessory tube
With both hands, assemble the accessories back into the tube. Hold the gun with your left hand as during disassembly, hold the accessory tube with your right hand (lid facing inward), and fit the tube into the storage compartment at the stock base. Push the tube fully in with your index finger, then release your finger so the lid automatically closes.
+ Step 7: Assemble the magazine
Hold the gun with your left hand as during disassembly, hold the magazine with your right hand, fit the front lug of the magazine into the receiver cutout and press it down, then pull it down to fit the rear catch of the magazine into the latch slot, ensuring it is securely locked.
